But what was eventually written down was based on stories and sayings that were passed down verbally or recorded on scraps of parchment, animal bones, whatever.

The distinction between the two halves, the first relatively peaceful and the second, relatively bloody is there and corresponds to Muhammed's rise to power.

Whatever distortions or additions were made when it was later recorded as official Koran did not erase this bloody evolution in his thinking, and there is no justification for thinking it was introduced after the fact.
