Skins is very much locked in a certain time period.
It wouldn't much appeal to teenagers today and didn't appeal to adults when it was airing

I think that's partially because of the influence that the show had on pop culture and society, but whatever the reason, it means that watching it today bears no entertainment other than nostalgia. It's weird

I honestly barely remember any of the plot, only vague things. But I exactly remember the 'feel' of it, the environment, the tone of voices, the feelings of emptiness the characters have.

I can't think of anything else like this, it's a subtle time capsule for people growing up then, even if they didn't live lives as outlandish as the characters.

Gen 1 was absolutely great, every single character was colorful, genuine and relatable to some degree.
Gen 2 had only one great character (Cook, obviously) with the rest of them being significantly more bland and redundant than their predecessors, but the show somehow managed to maintain the general vibe of the previous seasons and the storylines were still decently engaging.
I refuse to acknowledge that the show continued afterwards,

I agree. There is a moment in the first episode where Sid is riding the bus and is using his shitty nokia, looking at pics he took of his friends where they were chilling on a grassy hill. They're is something so essential about being in a teen in that time that is captured in that scene.

I think as well it's the moments in between the storyline. Just the locations, the body language, the little practical things the characters do in between dialogue and action. All of it was immediately relatable.

Skins was Romantic Realism. Parts of the story were overblown and a fantasy, but at it's core you had a real dynamic. Friends, parents, school etc. It was a real place.

Watched this with my first gf when I was 16. Watched the start of it when we just started going out and we sort of stopped watching it. Then one week I finished season 2 and we broke up the day after. It was like November as well the following year, like exactly a year apart.
And now I can't really listen to Time To Pretend by MGMT anymore.
Even more weird was the next girl I went with just a month later was known in my area as effie because she looked identical to her. Was a touch odd
On the topic of effie though, I think her character in the first gen was completely ruined in the second. Went from being introverted and putting everybody before herswlf to being a total selfish whore in the first episode of the second generation. What a shame.

as someone who wasn't outgoing at that age, watching it when i was 16 helped stop me feeling like i'm watching exactly what i'm missing out on

Well, generally speaking the Maxxie/Anwar storylines were the weakest of the bunch and Whatshername wasn't helping, but to be fair it was just a supporting character and we had excellent supporting characters like Sid's dad to balance that out.

I think it depends on how popular you are but probably not really. I'm and even at 16 learning that somebody at sixth form college had done cocaine was fairly rare. I was a loser but got invited to parties and stuff around 15 and things never got more intense than drinking and smoking weed. People would hook up but I never saw/heard of any insane stuff going on. Then again I stopped being social soon after so it's possible I missed out and never realised what was going on but I think most of the crazy stuff happens at university.

I see it on American shows where the kids sneak out and Americans I've talked to online have said they did it but I've literally never heard of a British kid sneaking out at night.
