Have you ever actually seen a store with a sign that says what it formerly was, or is this a The Simpsons invention?

beta max

my name isn't max

sneed

Beta Barn
Alpha Village
What's not to get?

Max Feed

Max Power

Can any old fag tell me what actual diffrence between a VHS and Beta Max was?

(((meme)))

>what's he difference between cassette and vinyl

I mean, it was a completly different format, duh

virgins BTFO

they were very similar, beta was a slightly better quality

sony tried to keep their monopoly on beta, while vhs was licensed to whoever was interested and they brought costs down, costs were more important for the average consumer than quality

Beta Max was higher quality image and sound. VHS players allowed easier pirating, had no license (i.e. no dealing with Sony) and had longer run times.

Why wasn't beta as easy to pirate?

More or less. I'm old enough to remember both formats, my dad chose to get VHS because there seemed to be more movies. Video stores rented both but the VHS selection was larger. Over time the Beta section disappeared completely.

I think the VHS player was a few hundred dollars cheaper too.

Expensive and harder to set up. You could pirate off tv easy as, but VHS let you plug a super cheap player into your player and tape to tape copy easy.

There was a copyright system that didn't allow recording at all. You could get past it easy with a bit of sticky tape. Beta introduced that too to stop losing out on money.

Also beta max was short.

You could pirate three movies onto one vhs. Or if you didnt have a timer you could whack a six hour tape in before bed and record a midnight movie or whatever.

Mostly it was price. You could have a "proper" VHS machine and get a dog shit cheap secondary one. Play the rented tape on the dogshit one, record it on your good player. Lots more versatility in the hardware market too (because it wasn't all owned by one company like Sony/Beta), so you would have ones that could quick stop/record when you had ad breaks. Sony also advertised taping and fast forwarding through ads which got them sued and reluctant to add piracy features or ntsc / pal hybrids etc.

VHS let you release ANYTHING. It was a format, not a company. Porn, etc.

Also beta was 1 hour run times at first, so all the first/early home movie releases and thus later rentals were dominated by VHS companies.

Beta higher quality.

VHS cheaper. Even more important than that, VHS had tapes that could record for 120 minutes, later 240 minutes, when Beta had tapes which could only record for 60 minutes. Beta later released tapes which could record for longer... which reduced picture quality to roughly that of VHS. People don't mention this aspect much but it was probably more important than price.

Literally makes no fucking sense to me?

reminder, sneed poster is an underage spammer

Thanks m8

Really Beta is overrated. "Herp derp it was better picture quality than VHS in 60 minute mode!" Well good for Betamax, I guess that makes it better if you want to record a single thirty minute or hour long TV show and do nothing besides that, spend more money, and buy more tapes. Beta lost for a reason.

>both have four legs and a tail
are you retarded m8

It was a pop culture reference. At the time, dog racing was considered ethically problematic, with groups like PETA pushing for it to be outlawed. The joke is that the track owners are trying to make themselves seem less offensive by asking attendees to recognise the similarities to another, more socially acceptable practise, and the artist/writer is gently mocking the groups opposed to dog racing

what's vhs? since it was formerly beta, is it some kind of alpha thing?

I've worked in one- the owners changed the company name but didn't want old customers to think it had gotten bought out.

lurk moar dumb ass newfag, the newest meme on Sup Forums is to post signs from the simpsons and act like you dont understand them. fuck off somewhere else if you dont get the joke.

...

That's (((Sony))) for ya. They've always had a boner for proprietary garbage.

Is this a reference or something???

This pic filled my heart up with sunshine, sunshine!

what did they mean by this?

used to be fuck's feed and suck, now it's sneed's VHS barn

>sneed poster
So, you?

I'm 32 and only remember VHS. How fucking old are you?

strawpoll.me/13742530

Has someone tried to ask one of the Simpsons writers about the actual meaning of the joke?

Yes, usually restaurants

It's a reference to the knife Sneed used to murder Chuck so that he could take over his Fuck and Suck and turn it into a Feed and Seed.
