Is it just me or is this movie a pretty basic, just OK Disney movie? I fail to understand the raving about it

It's not a breakout movie like Frozen (tm) but it was well received.

Good songs and setting but everything else was shit and nothing made any sense.
You're Welcome got me hyped for this movie but Maui ended up being some asshole who caused all the problems and lied about everything he did in the song.

Me, too. Frozen was garbage, Moanna wasn't great, but it worked pretty well as a Disney movie. Tangled is better than both.

The visuals were gorgeous, the songs were okay, but the story was sterile and generic.

I think it's because it was just a simple adventure story. Back to the roots of the genre. Too many kids movies nowadays are too fucking busy and try to shove way too many "positive messages" and stupid shit like that into the story. Moana is just a girl going on an adventure to save her island, teaming up with a dude trying to redeem himself and gain back his strength and confidence.

Pretty much this. Mix that with catchy music and great visuals and you're pretty much golden for a Disney family film

It was pretty decent but I won't call it one of my favorites, or even one of the best of this era.
Frozen is one of my favorite Disney films, though.

Also, the guys who directed Moana also directed two of my favorite Disney films: The Little Mermaid and Treasure Planet.

I liked it but I agree it was super straight-forward. Story has basically no twists and turns. Frozen and Tangled were both more interesting in terms of princess movie story. Moana did succeed aesthetically but I mean so do the other recent Disney films.
