Where are you from? I don't think Frontier Theory applies so much to the northeastern US where the majority of Irish Catholics are from. That isn't to say DC-Boston doesn't have an "American" personality but it's very different from the rest of the US. The fact that there are Bostonians and New Yorkers that call themselves Irishmen, whether it's justified or not, is indicative of this.
