Why do people even assume the Mexican government has to agree to pay for the wall, as in personally write a check?

If you slap a tariff of merely 1% on all US imports from Mexico (they won't even notice that), the wall practically is paid for within 5 years.

Do the math:
- cost of wall: let's say 15 billion (that's significally higher than Trump's estimate)
- Mexican exports to US: roughly 300 billion

15/(300*0.01) = 5 years

Reduce this "Mexican Trade Privilege Tariff" to a permanent 0.5% after 5 years and you cover all the costs of surveillance/repairs/upgrades etc. AND you still make money.

And Mexico continues to profit from continuing good trade relations with their most important trade partner. Why would they even be making a fuzz about that?
