Ceuta and Melilla, the two african spanish territories are strongly conservative because the far left party wants to literally open borders (8 meter tall, heavily guarded and covered in barbed wire). Extremadura is moderate, country people, they may vote left or right, but never extremists.

Podemos is popular because they have the referendum in their elecotral program. Besides, they share the idea of Spain as a nation with different cultures, although it doesn't help much since they're absolutely pro cosmopolitism.

The left has always been more sympathetic with this concept of Spain and the conservatives have always been closer to castilian nationalism. In addition to this, we have historically been industrialized regions with a great movement of syndicalism.

A lot of people who vote them (including CUP, a far left party of Catalonia that seek independence) aren't really nationalists. They just want to create an state to put into practice their left policies. They don't give a fuck about our culture, they are full pro immigration and cosmopolitism even though ethnic catalans and vasques are a minority. Anyways, if you lived here, you would realize that to this day, most of the traditions still alive are based on paganism, not on christianity. In fact, most people are not christians anymore, but they keep practicing the traditions (the fires of san juan, the flowers of may, the day of the dead, etc). And thats a good thing.
