Mali and its successor Songhai were glorified trading hubs for slaves and gold. Timbuktu had an Islamic university, but that's irrelevant to blacks. Ghana had a lot of gold and not much else. Askum grew wealthy from being a middle man between rome and india, and was at least partly semetic. They range from unimpressive to basically cavemen.
