This isn't some big secret. Once you reach a certain age your body no long requires 8 hours of sleep a night. Most if not all old people sleep maybe 5 to 6 hours max.

It could be old age, old people don't require as much sleep. There's a second explanation: around 1% of the population has an "efficient sleeper" gene where they only require 3-4 hours sleep a day. Margeret Thatcher supposedly had it. Unfortunately OP, its not likely that you can get by without 6-9 hours sleep without it. You can't "train yourself" to need less sleep. You can still accomplish a lot with that though. Maybe try a more natural sleeping pattern though, studies show humans have a tendency to have a first sleep and second sleep. Without artificial light, they usually go to sleep at dusk, wake up at midnight for two hours and then go back to sleep until dawn. I think that might help people out immensly.

The hell I can't. I'm going to start going to sleep at 12am and forcing myself up with alarms at 4. That way I'll steal an extra 8 hours a day.

The greater the deprivation, the worse the performance. It will also have negative consequences on immune response and inflammation.

You just don't sleep. You can eat healthy, not drink, not smoke, and work out and it helps with energy levels as well.

Sleep is rather hard-coded compared to a lot of other systems because it involves the primitive brain (pons, medulla, midbrain). Effectively you'll be tanking your entire system by trying to skirt around it. Prolonged sleep deprivation is strongly linked to cancers and heart disease as well.

It isn't entirely about REM sleep. An entire sleep cycle takes around 90-120 minutes to complete. While cycle compression can occur, you limit the regenerative and repair ability of the body. You can't get around it. This is part of the reason, that you end up with both short-term (memory/reflex impairment) and long-term (cancer/heart disease) consequences.

Many cultures, particularly those with less first world interaction, do have natural "siesta" patterns. However, their total sleep time is still in a normal range. It may be superior to a single 7-8 hour block of sleep.

The part on training is wrong. People can physically perform the bullshit schedules, but there has been no evidence that they don't create physiological consequences.

One of the biggest is to build adequate sleep hygiene, as well as waking up at the same time each day.

In the evening, you should turn off the lights in your room. On the computer, you can use programs like f.lux to change the color temperature of your screen, which reduces the amount of blue light. Blue and short-wavelength visible light suppress melatonin production which signals your body to sleep. In the early morning, go outside for 15 minutes in the sun, or you can get a light box. These devices halt the melatonin, and help to cement waking cycles.

While I do set alarms for important things, I haven't woken up to alarms in years, and I've noticed a great improvement in sleep quality.
