This is a reminder that Italian, French and Spanish are not descendants of Latin, or even Vulgar Latin. But are instead Germanic creoles that had most of their Germanic vocabulary replaced with mispronounced Latin.

Even then, we basically backtracked and forcibly reintegrated Latin vocabulary in Old French during the 15tth-16th century.

We were basically the opposite way round. It is kind of fascinating that French and English are like alternate universe versions of each other - both were spoken by Celts who had learnt Latin and then later been conquered by Germanics. But Latin was mostly destroyed by the barbarians here whereas it survived in France.
