Geopolitical reason: Secure the oil in the Middle East, so that American allies control it.
Moral reason: Protection of American allies in the region, primary allies being; Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and Turkey.
Economical reason: Keeps the military from having to simply throw away weapons/ammunition.
Scientific reason: Way to justify the continued expansion of the US technological dominance.
Pure military reason: Officer training. Keeping NCO's/privates in shape, and giving them experience.

As an American Soldier myself, we dont even do none of that shit... at least not anymore. We do dumb shit everyday and its not even worth it.
