We've seen Alan popped several times already. The characters made of food items also regularly met with grizzly ends.
What sets Tobias apart is that he's, well, not really based on any inanimate object as far as I know. So shit like that feels more like it's happening to a living, flesh and blood being.

First of all I'd like to start by saying this was a 10/10 episode.
Getting that out of the way though, is it me or or does "the loser" status not particularly work in this case anymore?
In season one it'd work perfectly because back then his whole character was basically stupidly naive kid with bad luck getting his shit kicked in but as of season 5 he has a girlfriend, has one of the highest power levels in the show and despite not being popular in the conventional sense he surprisingly makes a lot of friends with most of the side-characters. Yes he doesn't hang out with all the other kids all of the time, but how many actively hate him despite being the biggest jerk in the show? Despite everything he usually helps (or at least tries to) all the kids to a point that even if they don't like his personality most of the time, they can still very much stand him and even be good friends with him. Despite being the most mean to Molly, he was the one that tried to give her a good story, despite finding Sarah annoying he decided to go through her fanfiction, when Jamie wanted a bf she (forcfully) decided on Gumball. He literally defeats Rob by being a nice guy to him.
Meanwhile Tobias has always been a wannabe jock and a failure. Hell, when Gumball figures out his real name he ends up being the same 80's cliche sitcom protagonist except when Gumball did it he actually almost got away with everything.
Basically he's Naruto. Maybe the more accurate term for Gumball would be "The Underdog" considering the same meaning and why the audience cheers as well as laugh at his shortcomings. Then again, this is SITCOM characters we are talking about.

I like that Gumball's had to fight for everything good in his life. Darwin and Penny will stick by him til the end.
Thing is it's all relative.Gumball isn't really that much of a jerk when you consider all the other characters.
True, I hadn't considered but he does have a lot going for him. Even with all the mistakes he makes he's got good family and friends to be with him through all his troubles.

I think he's more like 'the loser' as the one you wouldn't expect to pull through, the underdog. He's generally kind of an idiot despite his smart moments and no one really expects much of his efforts. He's the loser in more of a classical sense, the one with everything stacked against him and set up to fail.
