Because you enjoy easy emotional manipulation

what about mikedlv ?

If one of your best friends made a film would you still hate them just for being post-40s?

wahhhh Griffith sux!!

>D.W. Griffith was forced to re-shoot the sequence of the crucifixion because certain organizations were saying that Griffith shot too many Jewish extras around the cross, and not enough Romans. Griffith then burned the footage and re-shot the scene with more Roman extras.

Then Griffith burned the new footage and reshot the scene with EVEN MORE jews.

god-tier taste

Is DW. Griffith a meme in these threads ?
holy fuck that mollykins is cringy and irritating

For many critics and scholars — myself among them — D. W. Griffith’s Intolerance is the greatest film ever made. A century later we are as close to its subject as we are distant from its art. Political specifics, moral arguments, and movie styles may look different today, yet the only real difference is Griffith’s still-daring ingenuity, which calls for a more open-minded reception than in our simplistic habits we are accustomed to: It calls for an optimistic, united popular audience, which Griffith took for granted. When Intolerance premiered on September 5, 1916, its opening intertitles introduced silent-movie viewers to an extraordinary narrative device: “Our play is made up of four separate stories, laid in different periods of history, each with its own set of characters.” Employing a prologue and two acts, Griffith called it “a sun-play,” marked by florid melodramatics developed from Emersonian Transcendentalism, which film scholar Bill R. Scalia has described as “calling for an original American literature,” for “poets with the ability to ‘see’ past the material, apparent world to the world of eternal forms, which shaped nature in accordance with a divine moral imperative. Through this connection, man-as-poet would discover God in himself.”

What are some other good skate movies?

Bruce, I think you'll enjoy Heidi 1937

Pretentious much?

Dead Ringers was pretty cool. Not Cronenberg's best stuff but definitely interesting. I was going to give it a 3 but ended up giving it a 3.5 because of the performance by Irons.

Manhunter and Heat I've seen before. Great movies.

>pretentious

There is no other man I viscerally hate more than John Ford

Only the weakest men steal and profit over others' contributions

ok this is interesting. why?

>liking John Ford

Review by Mary Conti
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962

Watched Apr 27, 2014

Mary Conti’s review published on Letterboxd :
Never has a film been so allegorical before. It's not just the most political film ever made (damning BOTH liberals and conservatives in such succinct ways), but it's the biggest period dot in the sentence that is the Western's place in history. No Western after this, no matter how good they were, truly mattered after this film made its point. Of course, John Ford was probably the greatest filmmaker who ever lived, so this shouldn't be surprising.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is first and foremost a commentary on the Western itself, and all its archetypes and meanings. Ford examines the contradiction between hero and legend, and how the person who really did any real good fades into the past unrecognized by only those who are still alive to have known and remembered them. As usual, Ford finds himself attracted to the romantic allure of the past, yet he's balanced himself so well, that the film looks to the future with both optimism and alarm, that it works. It's the reason why Ford did so many damn Westerns, but it's also the best place to return to given the Western's very nature. It's a shame the Western is sort of dead, as no other genre carries the mythological and allegorical weight so well.

i mean i agree but can i get some more people trashing John Ford? is this a thing now?

shit-tier taste

100% bullshit. John Ford is over-rated beyond belief and his movies stink. but this review is even more off the mark. terrible work

>i hateee John Ford so much my faves? everything by Eadweard Muybridge :)]

letterboxd.com/OriginalName3/

Theodore Huff, one of the leading film critics of the first half of the 20th century, believed that [Intolerance] was the only motion picture worthy of taking its place alongside Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings, etc., as a separate and central artistic contribution.

wow. an old guy thought that?

You will never earn my respect no matter how much you suck up to me. Wallow in that trash heap you call an existence.

>rankings are not set in stone

Did John Ford go to the SNYDER school of subtlety???
