Show did a really great job of gritty 1970's nyc. Almost all depictions of nyc make it romantic and interesting, like you'd want to go there. Even The Warriors.

In this it's just dirty and kinda hopeless. I felt really glad that I wasn't there and questioned my lifelong ambition to one day live in Manhattan.

Also interesting that they made the pimps and johns so sympathetic. Usually the pimp/ho relationship is depicted as "she wants to get away but the evil man has her trapped and she has no choice." It's refreshingly realistic in The Deuce, instead of being caricatures and tropes.

Too bad episode 1 didn't really go anywhere. 6/10 a good intro to the characters.
