Probably lost it in whatever deleted scenes happened that involved Maz using the Force on stormtroopers. He has the rifle strapped to his back when Maz gives him the lightsaber- next time we see him, they're crawling out of the basement out into the rubble and the rifle's gone without explanation, and that's where "I NEED A WEAPON" happens. He seems to have gotten it back by the time they go to Starkiller, though I guess since it's a Resistance rifle maybe they just gave him another one.
The weird part is that even though they deleted a scene where he apparently lost the rifle, they still left the part where he offers it back to Han and he tells him to keep it. So they make a point of showing us that he's keeping the rifle only for him to just lose it for no reason.
