This never made sense to me. He's supposed to become Hulk when he's angry, and it takes some time for him to transform, but then he tells a story where he became the Hulk when he tried to commit suicide, and instantly as well. I mean, I get that Whedon was trying to come up with something clever, but that's not how the character works at all.

He's always angry lmao
In the comics Bruce is immortal due to the hulk. The suicide scene is accurate.
Might be sort of a shortened story. Where he had the gun in his mouth, but then began to transform, and didn't pull the trigger until it was too late. And who is to say the transformation was instant, or his body didn't just make the back of his mouth really strong first?
Why would he even be transforming? He wouldn't be angry. He's be sad and depressed if he's trying to kill himself. It's just shitty writing, where Bruce only becomes the Hulk not because he's angry, but because the script calls for it and Whedon is a shit writer.
He also turns when he is in danger, like when BW pushes him in the pit in AoU. I dont read comics so idk if it's like that there too but that's how it works in the movies
fear, anger, sadness come from the same place in the brain.
So like I said, there are no rules as to when he transforms, he just transforms whenever the writers feel like having Hulk be Hulk. That's lazy, shitty writing. Imagine if Superman worked that way, and sometimes a punch would knock his ass out, no Kryptonite required, just because the script "needed" for him to be knocked out, but then later he's ignoring bullets and atomic explosions and shit.
Why are you expecting capeshit to have coherent writing?
Hulk becomes stronger when hes angry. He doesn't need to be angry to transform. Its almost like Jekyll and Hyde though. The Hulk side of him has a survival instinct. He tries to kill himself and it will stop him. Its his primal self. It wants to live.
True, but it's just something that's so basic that it makes zero sense that they wouldn't be able to keep it straight. I mean, hell, the old 70's Hulk was able to maintain the simple "Banner + anger = Hulk" rule and the writing on that show wasn't all that great.
GotG and Dr Strange have basically destroyed the entire MCU anyway so theres no point putting effort into any of it
That's how the character works, there is a Hulk comic that actually shows exactly what Banner describes in the movie. The Hulk is always active in Banner's subconscious mind, and he won't allow Banner to die.
First, it's a fucking comic book movie so shit doesn't make sense. Magic just happens when they want it to, doesn't happen when they want it to, whatever.
Second, it was always a cellular level sort of thing. So I can easily be convinced that the collection of cells that were first impacted by the bullet had an almost instantaneous transformation that blunted the bullet and then those cells triggered the rest of his body into transforming.
nah, they were destroying themselves with or without them. they cheaped out way too hard.
Yeah but now the entire universe makes no sense instead of just a couple of minor character inconsistencies
Add to that the trainwreck of the infinity stones and it's impossible for me to care about anything that happens in these movies anymore
The character works however you want him to work, he's fictional.
Bruce often fast-changes into the Hulk instinctively when he is in physical danger. It makes him almost impossible to kill.
Whedon wrote that in reference to a deleted scene from the Ed Norton Incredible Hulk. In that scene he shoots himself in the mouth and the pain from being shot causes the Hulk to activate and roar. That was the original opening to the film.
...
Movies should make sense even if they're comic book movies. There's a big difference between saying "magic exists," and saying "magic works like this" only to have magic work completely differently in other scenes with zero explanation for the lack of consistency. If you can't follow your own rules, don't establish the rules.
Even "he can't control becoming Hulk" isn't true because he becomes Hulk on his own accord in that "I'm always angry" scene. Oh, and what's up with that line if anger isn't what turns him into the Hulk and he just turns into the Hulk whenever?
It's just shit writing, dude.
Edward Norton Hulk established pretty firmly that the transformation was tied to his heart rate. Can't even fuck his girlfriend because as soon as he gets going he's gonna hulk out.
Didn't read the thread but as far back as the 70s hulk is established as some alter ego that manifests when banner "loses control" and if putting a bullet in your head isn't losing control then I don't know what is. Besides that, from 80s on up it's established that hulk and banner are less two heads on the same coin, and more two people in one body, hulk has been seen overriding banner for long periods if time and iirc banner has died in the books with the hulk living on anyways, and even saying he misses banner.
Tldr it gets stupid and hulk is a dumb character that needs to be played dumb, director did nothing wrong
Edward Norton Hulk is not canon.
Sam Elliot plays the same character in that movie and Civil War, so that implies it is canon.
rdj is in the post credits scene, and general ross is in civil war, it is absolutely part of the mcu.
You're thinking of the Ang Lee Hulk. Edward Norton would still be the Hulk in MCU if he hadn't turned down the role when it came time to reprise it for the Avengers.
The MCU Hulk turns Hulk when his heart rate hits 200. At the end of his movie, he learns how to somewhat control his heart rate, although he doesn't have total control over it.
This. Hulk will never let banner die. And the hulk absolutely resents banner for it. The hulk is its own entity
His heart rate is not the sole factor. Just one of many, and one NortonBanner could learn to control.
The movie flat out says that a 200 heart rate is what turns him into the Hulk.
Yes it does, but it does not imply that's the only thing that does it. Take a breath.
