Not in the Panama. Further you go down stream the harsher and harsher it gets. Even the local tribes people sometimes die, and they live their entire life traversing through the area. Locals die there to, and whenever someone goes missing, they don't even report it, because they know they're gone, and even if they did report it, the police don't do anything because they know the person is gone.

No doubt the girls were brave and fought with all the knowledge they had. But rangers say they should have traveled up the stream because it could have increased their chances of getting a signal the higher they went.

Imagine being lost in the woods in a strange third world country. Having to take flash pictures to see where you are. Imagine the sheer terror. I mean christ, you couldn't imagine it. It probably was a nightmare in the truest sense of the word. Not only is there the constant looming question of "will I ever see my loved ones again, and live to grow older and have a family of my own?" but there would also be a horrifying gut feeling of animals lurking around every bush and corner. They say that if you get lost in the woods, you turn into a completely different person. You lose your mind and start to do things you would never normally do.

Its a cruel fate but you can't really say it isn't expected. They decided to go take a hike in an forest completely foreign to them without any guide, that was a huge mistake.
