The ideological schizophrenia in Spain is caused by spanish nationalists, who always were national-catholics, which is the same as saying national-universalists. They see Spain as some sort of divine nation which has the purpose of unifying the world under christendom.
For historical reasons, they cooperated with the european far-right, and later oppressed the peripheral cultures (as good universalists), so the commies used that fact to infiltrate peripheral nationalism (which was far-right at first), effectively creating just another form of ideological schizophrenia, national-marxists, which is again the same as saying national-universalists.
It's tricky to understand. I doubt you can fully understand it if you are not spanish. At the end, it just doesn't make sense.
