I've never seen this thread on Sup Forums before so I wonder how long it will last. I've always wondered how they choose best screen writing candidates/winners for Oscars/Golden Globes. Do they look only at the content or do they look at technical ability? Some combination of both. If a movie wins best screenplay and doesn't win best picture aren't they basically saying the cast/director suck balls?

We have threads every once in a while, sometimes they reach 100+ posts, and sometimes (it's very rare) they hit bump limit.

Man, people are really misusing this whole Copying is good idea.

They don't misuse it they just forget there are steps after it and that when you are copying you are supposed to analyze what you are copying. Look at what worked what didn't work. How they did x or y. Then apply it to your own writing. After you do that you should theoretically find your own voice.

I really don't understand the "good artists copy great artists steal" shit, it makes no sense to me whatsoever.

cooperative project with a visual artist and musician converting stories into scripts. slow going because i'm not a professional

"There is nothing new under the sun"

Maybe copy is the wrong word. Recreate is a better one.

When you try to recreate someone else's work, it forces you to think about how they did it and why.
Then you can use what you have learned to create your own works.

sounds cool bro

Maybe. That kind of helps.

I'm having trouble STARTING more than anything. My mind bounces around from one point to another and has for most of my life. I'll pick up on one idea and kinda live in that world while I listen to music but...I just never get it written down. Been that way for years now.

The Shape of Water is a 2017 American romantic fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro and written by del Toro and Vanessa Taylor. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Octavia Spencer. It was screened in the main competition section of the 74th Venice International Film Festival and premiered on August 31, 2017,[2] where it was awarded the Golden Lion for best film in the competition.

>tfw can't come up or commit to any ideas

It's one of those things where full context is much better, since the saying sounds prettier than the idea. It's not like, "Recreate Othello in a better set of words, recreate The Graduate shot for shot," or anything like that. You read many books and take what they did better than any others away, or use the best actions/shots/lighting/etc from films and use them how you feel they'd be used best, because these better things can always turn out different as long as you're being authentic. You can't be original, so be authentic. You can't get better than whatever's the best, so use the best your own way.

I bet I could write a script some chosen member of a certain faith would buy for $40k.

Yeah, nobody ever gives full context.

thoughts about filming me railing whores and trannys on backpages?

if a escort cost 200$ per hour

how would i sell the clip? do people even pay for porn? because i dont

Finished writing a feature. Needs a polish, but for now it's done. Starting to work on my next one, need to plot out a robin hood/zorro fantasy essentially.

They vote. Same with most other things like best picture and director. Unlike technical awards in the oscars like for sound mixing or sound design, where ONLY sound mixers can vote on it because no one has any clue what good or bad, everyone gets to vote.

Which is why you see things like the hurt locker, eternal sunshine, lost in translation, midnight in paris and birdman win best original screenplay, when each screenplay has flaws, and you can do some decent arguments that the nominees of those years were better screenplays. So essentially, about a third of the time oscar voters pick dumb shit. Memento was nominated and not a winner for best original screenplay, it lost to something i've never heard of. Some of hollywoods favourite screenplays, like casablanca, the princess bride, the graduate, lawrence of arabia, the shawshank redemption weren't even nominated.

TL;DR: The oscars is shit and isn't the best judge of quality.

Trips of truth

Trips confirming the confirmation.

> What are you working on?
Starting a new script for a screenwriting class. A guy is desperate to break up his best friend's relationship because he thinks she's a succubus. Think of the style of "They Look Like People."

I did this before I even knew it was writing advice. I literally typed out, word-for-word, the entire Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion, and History of Middle-earth exactly 7 times before writing my first fantasy novel. It got published, btw. Sold 9 copies.

>exactly 7 times before writing my first fantasy novel. It got published, btw. Sold 9 copies

You must be very proud to hold this action in high esteem.

how do you come up with your ideas

Sounds dope. Feature?

I love horror movies and I keep reading that you should see what scares you. I remember that when my friends started dating, they basically disappeared from my life, so I thought that'd be a good start. I have other ideas, but this is probably the only one that's actually personal to me.

Yeah, hopefully. I've finished some shorts and stuff, and started another feature, but I've yet to finish a full-length script.

high concept idea, right here.
