Saturday at 3 AM, a 17-year-old girl was assaulted and raped in my smallish (35k) hometown of Kampen, Overijssel province. It happened on the Flevoweg, a long road that goes from the town to the Flevoland province, and directly on the other side of the border there's a refugee center. You can probably see where this is going.
Yesterday, it was at last made known that the perpetrator was an 33-year-old asylum seeker of uncertain origin who lived in the Refugee Center in the bordering municipality of Dronten. Why and how he was allowed to be outside at three AM is still unknown. His 22-year-old alleged wife was arrested as well.
This comes as a big shock, since this is a very quiet town for Dutch standards. Very conservative and in the middle of the Dutch Bible Belt. It also has a very well preserved Hanseatic city center.
As for the girl, she was taken to the hospital and is doing relatively fine.

The religious are also divided between rightwing (against immigration) and leftwing (for immigration). I wouldn't say the religious are particularly left or right on this issue. The population seems, at large, more right than left on this issue. The government, however, seems more left than right on the issue. Some believe due to influence (and money) from EU.

It's spray painted a lot. There's also been protests the other way, with people siding with humanitarian efforts, like "Refugees welcome" and offering refugees a room in their own homes.

The left says we should help these people and ignores the financial part of it, and the right says we have no money to help these people and ignores the humanitarian part of it. The right also emphasises the violence and rape that could happen, has happened and will happen more, and those are generally painted as racists by the left.
I believe the population at large is mostly right on this because we are already struggling with immigration issues. There's definitely a sense of resentment among the population towards Moroccan and Turkish youth, who have statistically shown to be troublemakers. The Dutch are known for their tolerance (sexuality, drugs, personal freedom, etc), and these issues are making us feel like we are made to lose that identity.
Hope this paints a bit of the picture.

On it already. The town is enraged. Even my more liberal acquaintances are starting to get fed up. They were already sick of the loitering the migrants did in our town. I know there has been a little scene at the town hall because our current mayor is a coward and has not taken any measures against them. No riots or anything, but heated debate has already taken place.
Unfortunately, it falls on the neighboring municipality to keep the migrants in check, and they suck at it. There have been multiple incidents at the Dronten AZC where migrants used violence against other migrants.
Though the media calls it a zedendelict, it's pretty clear rape (as in, forced penetration) took place, among other abuses. While I don't know the girl or her parents personally, I know who it is and we have mutual acquaintances.

I get it in the UK, they are a nation of low-class idiots ruled by a (what used to be) competent higher class. But in the Netherlands people are generally clever and educated middle-class. Yet you approach foreign culture like a black dude approaches math.
