Not true at all, Virginia is pretty damn conservative overall, voted Obama twice because Bush was so radioactive to the GOP.
Also, check that turn out for VA. There's a lot of religious folks in Virginia who McCain and Romney both alienated by pretending they didn't exist, while Trump specifically mentions evangelicals all the time. The state is definitely in play.
