Manipulating people to desired ends isn’t some sci-fi technology or magic trick (though I’m sure these help). Mind manipulation is simply applying what we know about the human mind and its behavior. One common example is the prevalence of logical fallacies in common discourse, these logical fallacies are a kind of “brain exploit” that can be used alone or with other techniques to persuade people towards specific ideas and behaviors.These “brain hacks” manipulate people by limiting the amount of observable options in their life. Why ban certain behaviors if you can prevent people from thinking about them?
Most people believe that the key to manipulating large populations is fear. Fear is certainly a powerful tool but it is only a mechanism towards a greater end. To be afraid is to focus on that fear and that focus is the power that binds you. The real key is exhaustion, your enemy cannot fight with depleted reserves. This is why you see constant attacks on (and perversions of) societies key support networks like the family, the community, and the nation. Most people imagine social programming as simply maintaining the overton window, all the messages, signals and memes are simply to maintain the preferred set of views.
It goes beyond enforcing acceptable limits of discourse. This is why divide and conquer is such a large part of the mind manipulation strategy: Distract a group with an introduced conflict so that while they deplete their resources fighting each other there is no support left to defend themselves. On an individual level this means that people are kept too tired to improve themselves, too tired to read and reflect on new ideas, too exhausted to move forward, but more importantly often too tired to help and support those they care about. This lack of energy is the very force that keeps your mind shackled. Your brain needs energy to function and depriving yourself of that energy is worse than IQ reducing chemicals in your water.
If apathy is death exhaustion is the pathogen. As an individual to rise up not only do you need to raise your energy levels (eating well, exercising, giving yourself enough personal time, spending time with those you care about) you need to help your loved ones do the same. Once they’re in a better situation they can help you. All the best civilizations are built on not only strong support networks but also the most efficient ones: family, friends, community, and country. Building up yourself and those around you is a very difficult challenge. The media, the culture, and too often even the damn food you eat is against you.
