It's mostly to do with women coming into the workplace. It's important to understand that for all of human history until recently, men were the providers. Now, women are the providers too; young women earning as much or more than young men. Women coming into the workplace depressed wages immensely which then caused even more women to enter the workplace (most men can't support a family on only their wage because of the depressed wages, so their partner needs to work too). For many men, the choice is between doing a low wage job or being a NEET. Men who are able to attract women will opt for doing a low wage job because they have a family in mind. Men who aren't will opt to be a NEET, not necessarily because they are lazy, but because there is simply no motivation to work. .

That would actually be better for the economy in the long run. If those jobs went vacant long enough, eventually those employers would have to raise the entry level wage to make the positions more attractive to potential hires. That would lead to other entry level and unskilled jobs having to raise their entry level wages to compete for new talent, which would give us an organic increase in minimum wages.

The advent of illegals would also lower the cost of rent due to the new supply of low-cost housing without a demand to match it.

So I just wait around, mostly stagnating. I'm going back to school to get a master's this upcoming Spring, so I at least have that on the horizon. I'll be going pretty far into debt to do it, but I think it's the only thing that will get my ass back in gear at this point. My mind feels dull after all this time not working.
