What are some classic movies that every man of taste has seen? Especially ones that are darker in theme, but others too. I'm just "getting into" film and I need recs please.

Thanks dad, any movies this century lmao
the pest
all a bunch of schlock
Derusu Uzura is such a weird thing to list of essentials in opposition to a good half dozen other Kurosawa titles. I mean it's good and one of my favorites of his, just strange to put there but not Ikiru, Throne of Blood, Ran, Kagemusha, Rashomon, Yojimbo, High & Low, Red Beard, Hidden Fortress, etc. for someone just getting into the classics. I seriously doubt most film buffs have watched that movie.
To add my nip film autism to the thread:
>Harakiri
>The Samurai Trilogy
>Woman in the Dunes
>Tokyo Story
>Floating Weeds
>The Human Condition Trilogy
>House
>Ugetsu
>Kwaidan
>Gojira
>The Insect Woman
>Violent Cop
>Sonatine
>Hana-Bi
>Ikiru
>Yojimbo
>Rashomon
>Ran
>Branded to Kill
>Tokyo Drifter
>Good Morning
>Tetsuo: The Iron Man
>The Sword of Doom
>Ringu
>Akira
>Nausicaa
>Princess Mononoke
Good representation of the essentials.
Good list, even avoided the meme movies to shake off teenage reddit replies.
Still got two, though.
more schlock
Memes aside, things like Citizen Kane and Psycho are still worth a watch.
I remember that meme.
We're both oldfags
>thread about classic movies
>complains if not made within the last seventeen years
All those stupid pedals when you could just get an AxeFX
and The Shining.
no
no
Honestly, OP would like stuff like Fight Club and Pulp Fiction and the like.
We all know it's what he wants. They are entry level for a reason.
AxeFX has it's limitations, might as well just go digital if you're going to go down that route as well. Not that I would defend having more than five or ten pedals at most, it's like what the fuck are you planning on doing. All I need is distortion, delay, envelope filter, and octave divider and I'm good.
I agree that those would belong on such a list.
>nu-Sup Forums
amazing discussion skills. when are we getting a /film/ board?
Pretty great for a movie adaptation of a timeless book.
>tfw made a DIY EarthQuaker Hoof
>tfw total cost of parts are $40
Holy shit these boutique pedal makers are getting mad profits from clueless retards.
Protip: use 2x MP-37B germaniums

both films are good
post ur pedalboards, Sup Forums
all I use these days.
>man of taste
>just copies his taste straight out from pre made lists
The state of this board
Post yours.
I feel it decently captured the blending of helplessness and comedy the book had, even if it took some liberties with the material.
Hey I spent like ten minutes looking through my folders organizing the nip list. I even avoided putting in my favorites for the most part sticking to what are generally considered "essential". Thank me, maggot.
japan gay lol
Yeah, it's not perfect. But if you love the book you will likely love this movie. I don't really have the same expectations some people have when it comes to books->movies.
I had no idea this book got adapted.
I'm of the mind that a book's quality is entirely irrelevant to a movie's quality, but stuff like Blade Runner can be very disappointing when they exchange elements that made the story amazing for something lesser when it isn't even necessary to do so.

Chinatown and L.A Confidential are two fucking great crime/detective thrillers that don't get brought up enough. Chinatown is Jack Nicholsons best roll ever and completely btfo's the shining. In L.A. Confidential you get a faster movie that co-stars Guy Peirce, Kevin Spacey and Russel Crow as three very different 50's cops in a glorious period setting. These are the Kings of Kino.
love that album
>12 Angry Men (pretty old and slow, but a classic)
>Lawrence of Arabia(VERY LONG, but the cinematography makes up for it)
>The Good, the Bad and the Ugly(classic)
>Seven Samurai(circle jerked on Sup Forums for aeons, doesn't age well, started a popular trope so it MUST be included)
>2001: A Space Odyssey(ages like milk)
>Apocalypse Now(this movie doesn't fit in the list but it's good)
>The Godfather(classic)
>Taxi Driver(ruh row we're entering pacino territory now)
>Thief(Mann's first good movie)
>Heat(Mann's last good movie)
Only watch those movies OP, forget the rest.
...
of this list only these are truly essential:
>The Big Sleep
>The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
>The Night of the Hunter
>North by Northwest
>Seven Samurai
>The Bridge on the River Kwai
>2001: A Space Odyssey
>Apocalypse Now
>The Godfather
>Taxi Driver
>Chinatown
only these:
>House
>Gojira
>Violent Cop
>Yojimbo
>Rashomon
proof that Sup Forums is straight up trolling
>doesn't like Miami Vice

Redditcore
good list, but Manhunter is better than Thief.
I think I understand why you picked Touch of Evil over 3-4 other choices. But you should watch all Welles.
Also, need to include Blade Runner.
Not him but does popular/classic mean redditcore on Sup Forums?
I do not know the reason you posted this picture, but I am grateful for reminding me of that beautiful album. Gonna go listen to it one more time.
>do reverse google image search
>find album
yeah it's not bad, thanks
You just butchered both of those lists, what the fuck.
Blade Runner is kindof mediocre.
Post your list.
I can tell you haven't watched a fourth of the movies on the Japanese list and know nothing of their cinema history from the selections from this post. Embarrassing.
the collected Jamie Gillis filmography
>The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
One of my favorite movies ever.
And as long as we're talking about Bogart, casablanca is still one of the best films ever produced, and not in a fedora tipping kind of way, its just got a little bit of everything for everybody.
I thought casablanca was pretty boring but it definitely belongs in a list of classic essentials for film buffs.
>but Manhunter is better than Thief.
Thief is my favorite Mann film by a solid margin. Or maybe its just that based tangerine dream soundtrack.
