We're self sustainable in many ways but trade is the lifeblood of nations, after a while we'd lack rare earth minerals needed for higher end electronics and our consumer market would suffer greatly, something Americans haven't felt since the Great Depression.
We could close ourselves off, but the benefits wouldn't be that great compared to other approaches, like re-negotiating global trade and manufacture to benefit the US instead of a fair market
