My guess is that the AI was designed to judge FACIAL FEATURES to determine who is objectively more attractive.
Black people tend to have ugly noses, monkey shaped skulls and comically big lips. Of course the AI is going to determine that they are objectively worse looking than white people, everyone with working eyes can tell you that.
I don't think the AI was programmed to even take the skin color into consideration. It almost definitely was not. A programmer would have to flat out program the AI to think black skin is not attractive, which is clearly not what happened.
