It was great in its early days but when the new CEO came in and got rid of the wilderness and free trade that was the nail in the coffin for this game. It doesn't matter that they brought it all back, too many players were done with the shitty updates that removed content and they didn't bother to come back. A huge amount of the playerbase left and its what prevented runescape from growing a larger community
