It's a way of life historically speaking. Many of the British descended aussies come from the lower and lower middle classes and the prisoners from when it was a penal colony. Back then bantz was more than a way of life. It was a survival tactic of sorts. If you made good bantz you were less likely to be harmed by your more thuggish countrymen. But if you bantz too hard and piss off the wrong person, and your ass got a one way trip to dingoland.
