All the debt fuelled the economy and made it seem like growth was escalating exponentially. Reagan was a big government spender, and Thatcher injected all the surplus from the North Sea oil boom right into the economy without saving a dime for a rainy day.
The 80's boom years were all a mirage based on faulty expectations creating debt that the current generation has to shoulder. The mirage tricked the USSR and Eastern Europe to think that "capitalism" and rapid privatization was a good idea. It wasn't and they suffered for it in the 90's. The opening of second world markets like China and Eastern Europe boosted growth for a while in the West, and then the IT revolution came, now lets hope there comes a big advance in technology or developing economies or our growth will stagnate and all our debt based on future growth will kill us.
