Liberals hate everything about the oil industry, but the main reason why pipelines don't get built is because landowners (mostly wealthy and right-wing) don't want to sign easements to oil companies and politicians don't want to force them.

The environmental problem will be far worse if the pipeline is stopped. If it goes to railroads the chances of oil spills is far greater than if there's a pipeline.

Pipelines are cheaper and safer than rail for transporting oil and gas.

However, in cases where cheaper transport results in increased production due to lowering marginal cost, there can be increased environmental damage. This is one major argument that isn't retarded related to Keystone.

The primary issues is that leftists somehow think that if a pipeline is not but, that somehow the oil will be left in the ground and not burned.

A secondary factor as others have mentioned is that Warren Buffett owns the rail line that transports the oil that would go through the Keystone pipeline.

Pipelines in theory are a great idea; you avoid the more dangerous method of transport by railway and also save cash in the long run by not wasting resources sending the trains back and forth.

The issue isn't the concept of pipes, it's how they're implemented. Burgerland corporate-designed transfer systems are notorious for being garbage because they build them with shit-tier materials, and therefore leak shit into the aquifers and groundwater systems. And then the companies who make them can't be taken to task in an effective way if they fuck up because the laws are stacked hilariously in favor of private institutions.

Couple that with the rising Native American nationalist movement seeing this as trespassing on their soil, and involvement from the green energy fuckjobs who hate oil pipes not because their issues but just because they hate oil period, and you have the recipe for drama.

Basically companies that own pipelines cheap out on maintenance and, eventually, the clean up of spills. They often don't have enough money to cover the costs of a large spill and the cost is passed on to the taxpayer.

Pipelines have the potential for very large spills whereas shipping oil by rail has a limit to the size of a spill.

Oil pipelines are massive infrastructure projects which have a lot of the same issues getting built as major roads - need to run long distances over land the government doesn't already own.

It is a much cheaper and safer way to transport oil. No trucks blowing up and so on so there is a lot less money used to transport, less insurance and that sort of thing. This means cheaper gas than it otherwise would be.

Canada heavy crude costs about $15/bbl to transport via rail - it cannot be transported via pipeline over long distance because it has too high of a viscosity to do so, and even for short distances it requires dilution by about 50 percent.

If they break open we're going to have to clean up a shitload of oil. Oil happens to be poisonous to most living things, so being covered in oil with be a negative thing for most living things. Living things fill niches in a stable environment, if large quantities of living things die the environment is endangered. If living things are exposed to large quantities of a material which is poisonous to them they will die.
