Actors who willingly let the costume designers cover their faces for entire scenes are real actors who do it for their craft. See Karl Urban in Dredd.

Actors who immidiately discard combat helmets or masks despite how illogical it would be for the character to do it are hacks who just want to promote themselves. Hardy proved that he isn't in it for the self promotion due to him wearing a mask for the obvious film, and the vast majority of Dunkirk.
