If you are a poor fag you can save the seeds from produce you buy at the market. Most of the seeds are hybrids and won't produce the same way, but if you are careful and select more "traditional" brands you should be able to get actual plants.
Example: honeycrisp apples won't work, they are a mix and the seeds won't yield them, you'll get the parent plant instead. But a regular red delicious will probably provide viable seeds.
Get the meat of the fruit/veggie off of the seed, then place it in a towel to dry for about 2-3 days. Do not freeze the seeds, but you can keep them cooled at 60-50 degrees. Try to keep them from light. They will be viable for up to 2-3 years, and over time the seeds one by one will "not germinate", i.e. they will be "dead".
