What if Sonny Corleone hadn't been killed?

We had a good convo about the Godfather a while back and it got me wondering: What if Sony hadn't died?

Michael stepped into becoming the Don because Sonny was dead, Fredo was useless, and Tom couldn't get the role. If Sonny had heeded Tom's advice to not go off and beat Carlo up, it changes a lot of things.

Michael's 1st wife Appollonia might not have been killed. The death of Sonny triggered the attempted bombing of Michael in Sicily. Also Fredo wouldn't be as butthurt if his older brother had ascended as don and not his younger brother.

Thoughts?

>what if a good movie was poorly written instead?

WAT

What if OP wasn't a faggot?

but would sonny have wiped out the other familys like michael did after vito died? would he have gotten into the drug trade also? would michael come back and not agree withhow he ran the family and started his own faction with tom since soinny didnt think tom was a good consiglieri

Sonny was too hot-headed and aggressive to lead. If he didn't die there, he would have wound up dead later by flexing too much muscle.

In fact, if he just kept his mouth shut, there would not have been an assassination attempt on his father.

>but would sonny have wiped out the other familys like michael did after vito died?
Sure he would. Sonny would never forgive the attempted hit on Vito and if he actually calmed fuck down by listening to Tom and Michael, he'd kill the 5 families.

>would he have gotten into the drug trade also?
Sonny being interested in the drug trade is what spurred the attempt on Vito's life. If Vito had died, the other families felt that Sonny would be more malleable to having the heroin trade. Vito was against it because he was worried about the political repercussions.

>would michael come back and not agree withhow he ran the family and started his own faction with tom since soinny didnt think tom was a good consiglieri
Actually, it's not that Tom was a bad consigliere so much as that Sonny was a bad don. He was too hot-headed for his own good, Tom was clever and patients; qualities that a don needs. Sonny needed to listen to Tom instead of going half-cocked all the time.

I think if Sonny and Appollonia hadn't been killed, Michael would've either gotten into politics like Vito wanted or gotten involved in the legitimate facet of the Corleone family like handling the casinos and other dealings in Nevada. Unlike Kay, Appollonia would know her place as a wife since she was Sicilian and I think Michael wouldn't have delved into crime if Sonny was still around.

What happens after the 5 families were wipe out is up in the air because it begs the question of what Sonny would do to expand and consolidate the family holdings.

>In fact, if he just kept his mouth shut, there would not have been an assassination attempt on his father.
So very true. If Sonny had kept quiet, it would've changed A LOT of things.

Vito not being gunned down means Michael and Enzo the baker don't thwart another assassination at the hospital. Nor does Michael get his jaw broken and he later kills Sollozo and the corrupt police captain. He doesn't go into hiding in Sicily, meet Appollonia, marry her, and then unfortunately loser her to a car bombing meant for him.

Michael would remain with Kay and probably assimilate to being an everyday American without ties to his family's criminal empire. He'd finish college and work for a corporation or something.

The 5 Families would still pester Vito to allow the heroin trade. Tom and Sonny would eventually make Vito see that it was in the best interests for the family because with the added revenues, it would make them even stronger. Plus they would eventually go to war with the 5 Families and probably wipe them out like Michael did as don. Moe Greene's casino is still a factor however, which would lead to later repercussions with Hyman Roth.

>Sonny was too hot-headed and aggressive to lead. If he didn't die there, he would have wound up dead later by flexing too much muscle.
He was, but given time, he might have cooled down if Vito sat him down and told his eldest that he needs to calm the fuck down and listen to Tom.

The real question is, what the fuck does Fredo do? Does Sonny being don quell that kind of resentment that Fredo felt in Godfather II?

i think either way the hit on vito would have happened. remember it was bartzini who was behind it all and he was envious that vito had all the political connections.

>Im more interesting and smarter than Mario Puzo

you sure are genZ

True, but if Vito hadn't been shot up, I think Sonny and Tom would've eventually convinced their father to support Sollozzo. And if Luca Brasi doesn't get killed, it adds another player against the war on the 5 families. Luca was a serious nutjob in the book so we'd see his nasty side in the Corleone conflict.

Vito getting shot up also lead to repercussions with his daughter Connie. No way in hell would Carlo get away with beating the shit out of Connie like that. There's a difference between slapping your wife around which was considered acceptable by old school Sicilians and brutalizing your pregnant wife with a belt. That's Vito's future grandson so Carlo would've restrained himself and probably not side with Barzini if he knew what was good for him.

well if michael never became involved and stayed a civilian then that leaves fredo as the #2 plus he didnt resent sonny since he was older. sonny would have let fredo run vegas since hes good at that kinda thing

That's true. Fredo's gifts were hospitality and being the go-2 guy for entertainment. Fredo being in charge of the Vegas operations like the casinos would've been best for him. He would've felt like a valuable member of the family and got his just dues as the 2nd son.

I wonder how things would've turned out if Fredo was the triggerman to kill Sollozzo and McCluskey? Sollozzo would underestimate Fredo even more than Michael, but what if this was a Fredo that was ashamed at failing his father and wanted to protect Michael from getting involved with crime?

Fredo decides to do the assassination mission in Michael's place and does it perfectly. Does Fredo get sent to Sicily like Michael or someplace else? Would Fredo play a larger role in the family for having the guts to do something like that?

nah barzini had it in for the corleons even though it seemed like titaglia was the mastermind behind it all. vito should have considered thinking it over and feel out tataglia until barzini revealed himself then have sonny wipe him out maybe make a deal with tataglia but either way barzini wastoo power hungry

even though fredo had been made which means he killed someone i dont think he would have been capable of killing sollozzo and mccucky

would you guys rather be a foot soldier for the Corleone family? or a foot soldier for Pauly Cicero in Goodfellas?

do i get to kill billy batts

If Sonny hadn't been killed then the Corleone family probably would have been relegated to a street level gang or something. Or Tom Hagen would have stepped in before that happened and made Michael the Don anyway.

only if he insulted you a little bit

but sonny held his own against all the families. if sonny hadnt been killed they still would have called for peace just to stop the war and to get back to buisness but like everyone said someone has to step in and make sonny calm his ass down. i didnt think of this but what if vito schooled michael in the ways of being a consiglieri and guided sonny into calming his temper then stepped down and let sonny and michael run things. they would have been twice as powerful then before

why you mudda fucker

Corleones seem to have their shit together way more than anyone in Goodfellas, much less infighting and more organized against threats. Working for anyone in Goodfellas seemed like a recipe for getting stabbed in the back for no fucking reason.

even though the corleons are fictional while in goodfellas the lucchesses were a real mafia family it was the drug buisness that brought the mafia down
