Considering how they had repeated background characters, it probably was something like that.
It's so perplexing. Dwayne McDuffie was such a good guy, having written some of the best Justice League episodes, among other episodes for the DCAU. Then he gets put on Ben 10, and it just seems like he doesn't know what the hell he's doing. Inconsistencies (Ben sometimes having injuries carry over between alien and human forms, never even saying why it's a thing now), changing almost everything that wasn't alien related to now being alien related, and giving Ben a semi-decent maturation in the first two seasons before making him go full-retard in the final season.

Like what the fuck was the point? Gwen could've still been useful. It's not like she was useless before being revealed as an alien.

Honestly it makes more sense for the arc of the story.
They spent 90% of the OS tying all the supernatural shit to the plumbers and the aliens, Gwen's abilities are literally the last unsolved point.
They fucked up in simplifying her powers down to magic pink space lasers rather than porting over her old skillset.
