More than that, he was content to be normie wage slave with a little fantasy life he built around himself. He enjoyed dancing with his wife and reading books and watching movies.

And then he stumbles onto something he shouldn't have...the foundation of his life up to that point is broken and he tries to be main character but has to give up his comfortable wageslave cell to do so. He does it and loses everything and it turns out it was just to have someone else lead the way.

He was programmed to serve as a Blade Runner, and he had impetus as a replicant to serve the rebellion and kill Deckard.

he did neither, he transcended his programming, he sacrificed his life to reunite Deckard and his daughter because he understood what it was to love another person, in the end.

The weather changes finally progresses from rain to snow in the final scene to mark K's progression from replicant to human being.

He recieves orders all the way through the film, get the farmer, get the skellington, go home, repeat the words, find the kid, kill the kid etc. he gets one more order, but he doesn’t follow it exactly. He isn’t an automaton any longer

I actually figured it out waaay earlier in the movie.

The first obvious clue was the fake record about two children being born, and the girl being supposedly diseased. I immediately realized this is a set-up for a plot twist, and realized the actual child would be female, not male.

And when Gosling visited the memory maker, my first cue was "It's actually this girl."

And I was right.
