The original was written by the writer of the Wizard of Oz, so its a fantasy movie rather than being a Christmas popsong movie. It has a lot more in common with the Rankin-Bass Hobbit than most of the christmas specials.
Honestly I wish they'd animated it like they later did Hobbit and Return of the King.

Both The Hobbit and Return of the King actually came before The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus, which was the last stop motion production made by Rankin-Bass.

I notice that a lot of the demons use the sound effects of kaiju from the Godzilla movies, namely the dragon uses Rodan's roars and the flying demon uses Mothra's screeches. Was copyright not a thing back in the 80s

interesting minor fact Satan Claus, the whole reason the earlier special Santa Claus Is Coming To Town even exists is because at the time it was made Rankin-Bass had wanted to do Life & Adventures of Santa Claus but couldn't get the rights to it, so they went and made their own version of a Santa Claus origin story, and then they eventually got to do Life & Adventures anyways so they came out ahead twice

Everybody likes the Miser Brothers, but nobody knows how to capitalize on that. I guarantee the live action Year Without a Santa Clause was made just for the Misers.
Little Drummer Boy is one of those movies that barely ever gets played, like Nester or Pinnochio's Christmas. I can't say I've seen it much.
The sequel gave us one of my favorite songs, though.
