It's a good funny episode but it really does seem like Trey and Matt were just being grouchy old codgers because they were out of touch with youth, and with every year Pokemon remains relevant and popular this episode feels all the more out of touch

I agree to an extent, but was it really that funny?

It is kind of funny looking back on all the people in the 90s who said that Pokemon was a fad that would die out in a year's time.

Hindsight is 20/20

>who said that Pokemon was a fad that would die out in a year's time.
Only pokemon go went that way, thank god.

>No Chinpokomon Go episode
>Only politics because of an unfunny story arc

Why did South Park stop doing quality episodes? Why did they buy into the meme that you should make episodes of a show in a fucking week? Don't they know that it takes time to write quality comedy?

You can go back and watch early season episodes and the jokes are still good, but try going back and watching an episode from a couple years ago. It's un-fucking-watchable because it's all tabloid shit that's irrelevent in a week. Beyond vaugly reminding you that something happened it's just not funny.

It's telling that the game was just recycled jokes from the first few seasons.

Eh, not really. The point of the show was that kids (most kids anyway) will grow out of Pokemon and into the next big thing, and they're not WRONG. Gamefreak introduces a new pair of games every three years BECAUSE of this phenomena; every two-to-three years the kids who were playing one generation grow up and move on, and they don't lose any money because they've already focus-tested and marketed the next games to the kids who're just about to turn 6. Then those kids will obsess about it for a year or two before moving on. And so on, and so forth.

I'll admit, I was surprised when my 10 y.o. nephew suddenly got as obsessed with Pokemon as I did at his age, back when X&Y came out. He watched all the episodes of the show on Netflix, and spent all his precious allowance on booster packs. I was okay with it because hey, before that it was Minecraft. Now he's 12 going on 13, and BIG SURPRISE Star Wars is his new obsession.

TL,DR: If you obsessed over Pkmn for longer than two years, you're the exception, not the rule.

Do fads even fade as often nowadays?

I think the internet helps to preserve a good number of them.

Most people I know played pokemon 4-5 years at most.
The nostalgiafagging is even worse considering these are people who grew up with gen 3 and 4 and consider everything after to be shit. Then you try to tell them about people who grew up with gen 1, but only after they've made reference to "THE GARBAGE POKEMON".

You say that but look at how fast pokemon go came and went.

Though there is an argument to made that its demise was because of poor development, not listening to legitamate complaints, weather and just not having the core things that the mainline games have, which is trading and battling other trainers.

They meant the extreme mania that it had, at the time it really was everywhere. They werent wrong in the sense that it's no where near as relevant in terms of the cultural mainstream, they never said it'd die out, just that it wont be absolutely everywhere like it was at the time.

Now Pokemon Go, that was a trend if there ever was one. Started enormous then fizzled out, and thank god for that because in my town anyway it was like you couldnt go down the fucking block without a horde of people staring at the ground while walking around.

I know, i fucking hate that shit. I know a guy and i love him but its such a shit move to say that every new gen is shit and only the original 151 are good. Yes theres some bad shit here and there currently but there was also some bad shit in gen 1 just as there was some good shit in both gen 1 and all the new gens after it

>a shit move to say that every new gen is shit and only the original 151 are good

True. Gold and Silver were also good. Everything after that was ass, though. Especially G3, which is a special kind of horrible.

>Gold and Silver were also good.
The remakes were even better, though I get the sense you haven't given anything past G3 a chance.

the other gens arent that bad, hell i think gen 5 has a good number of good pokemon design wise

>all of the things in this image are still popular

>Pokemon remains relevant and popular this episode feels all the more out of touch

Of course it feels dated. Its referencing a 20+ year old explosion in pop-culture. An episode about the soar in popularity of other children's media like TMNT or MMPR will feel just as removed in modern context. That's just the way it is with topical humour.

Nice try, faggotron, but my favorite pokemon is from G4. That doesn't change that they've been intentionally shitting up the series since G3 by stripping out features and making some terrible pokemon.

And G3 is still the worst selling Pokemon game... TWICE.

Jar Jar was never popular

>shitting up the series since G3 by stripping out features
So features from gen 1 and 2? Pretty sure they've been adding more, with the exception of having to use HMs.
I can say that I dislike the more plastic/less natural way of designing pokemon that emerged after gen 2, but I have no major issues with them otherwise.

Exactly, he represents Star Wars as a whole in this comic.

So why again did they decide they didn't want to do Chinpokomon Go? It even worked with the whole nostalgia theme of the season.

I liked Pokemon Go..

Also, to add it what the others have said, I wouldn't exactly call Matt and Trey salty ,old and out of touch codgers. When they made the episode, Trey had just turned 30 and Matt was 28.

You might say that even at that age one can be disillusioned with what the youth wants but even forgetting the fact that the two had already expierienced other dads such as TMNT, South Park at the time was at the bleeding edge of what the youth wanted and it still arguably is.

They had a busy schedule of not being funny to keep up this season.

>Trey and Matt are close to turning 50

Goddamn, it will be so fucked up when they stop with South Park. At least it won't become a zombie show since they are 90% of the voice cast.

Well there are outdated memes and FNAF dipped down in attention I think.

Remember Flappy Bird?

But it was. While it never 'died out' as such, it had somewhat fallen from mainstream media until the advent of Pokémon Go revived the franchise. It was mostly limited to children and autists prior to that.

>was it really that funny?
I dont know, why dont you ask ALABAMA MAN?

>Pokémon Go revived the franchise
Don't kid yourself, bandwagoner.
Pokemon Go was a fad that only had an impact in Game Freak and Nintendo getting more money.

I thought third gen had a really good batch of new Pokemon but I didn't care much for the rest of the game. Purely in terms of monsters I > III > II

>Pokémon Go revived the franchise
Dude what the fuck are you smoking? Pokemon sells millions and millions of copies every single generation. I think it's only behind Final Fantasy as the highest selling RPG franchise in history

what strip is this from?

can't find anything about it from just the creator's name

in fact, can't even find anything on the creator

>I think it's only behind Final Fantasy as the highest selling RPG franchise in history

It blows Final Fantasy out of the water. It's the 2nd highest selling video game franchise of ANY genre, behind Mario.

Not really, it got a huge resurgence when Sister Location was released. Also the merch for this series is fucking everywhere, I found some right next to the barbies at Toys R us.

>Why did they buy into the meme that you should make episodes of a show in a fucking week?

probably sometime during season 1

Is that supposed to be Tom or The Stig?

>fake toys commercials
>Garrison-san
>fake episodes
>dick jokes
BEST FUCKING EPISODE

Power Ranger.

Gen 1 - 55 million sold
Gen 2 - 30 million sold
Gen 3 - 20 million sold
Gen 4 - 25 million sold
Gen 5 - 10 million sold
Gen 6 - 7 million sold

pokemon was a fad

For a fad it's fading damn slow.

...

Uhh... Was this meant to be a response? I don't think it adds to anything. The file name is funny at least.

Sun and Moon blew past 10 million recently, so it's already surpassing the past 2 gens.

Pokémon Go is part of Nintendo's new strategy to make free mobile games to attract people to their consoles, it's working it seems.

Alabama MAYUN! He's quick! He's tall! He's active!
It was the best part of the episode.

No they predicted Pokemon's absurdity with it's newer generations before they were created. Pokemon is not "relevant", it's stuck in a cycle of it's good because it's popular and it's popular because it's good.

My mistake. It's been a while since I watched the episode

Your figures for Gen 5 and Gen 6 are bullshit. BW alone sold over 15 million, and coupled with its sequel the total for that gen is over 23 million. Gen 6's total is around 28 million (15 million from XY + 13 million from ORAS), so if anything Pokemon was on the rebound even before Go launched.

half the humor came from the adults being completely bewildered by the phenomenon so it's not like they lacked self awareness of how out-f-touch they'd gotten

the tiny asian penis jokes got boring fast though

>the tiny asian penis jokes got boring fast though
That's always been a problem with them. They find a joke they like and run it into the ground. For all the acclaim the wow episode gets, I find it borderline unwatchable because of how often they repeat the already unfunny "end of the world... of warcraft" joke.

Apparently the small penis joke was based on a real encounter, but the guy was Chinese, not Japanese.

Kill yourself

This scene here from season 19 was way funnier and accurate than any of their "Trump" and Hildog scenes from season 20.

Which begs the question, why did they fail so fucking badly in season 20.

This is just rich.

I'm glad this season bombed. Its what they deserve for being such massive Hillary shills and shitting on Emperor Trump. Hopefully they learned their lesson

a fucking shoe lol

Everybody thought Hillary was going to win without a fight.

and look how well that worked out for them

An old comic strip called "Committed"

It's second best selling video game franchise, but if we're talking about ANYTHING, pokemon made more money for nintendo than mario

mario doesn't have an anime that still airs to this day
mario doesn't have 20 movies and counting EVERY YEAR in cinema
mario doesn't have a card game
mario didn't have a fucking musical
mario doesn't have a world championships every year
not even gonna mention merchandise.

Pokémania died a long time ago but the franchise never did. It has a dedicated fanbase that continues to support this franchise to this day. not everything stays popular all the time. it just has to make money.

Even if they thought that, they could done a lot by having a cocky Garrison saying outrageous and sassy insults like Trump on Twitter or Caityln Jenner being a massive homephobe who hates everything like Pence. But nope we just had "ummm, I don't want to be president anyway" jokes.

TMNT,Star wars,Sentai, and pokemon all did stay popular forever though

So did Boglins.

>tfw I liked Gen 5 the most
This is fucking bullshit.

You do know a simple voice machine can make anyone sound like the main cast? Also some of that cast has be replaced with little notice.

it's because the was Matt and Trey's attitude. They did not want people to look favorable at Trump so they were very careful with how he responded. Basically they didn't want any chance you see them as Trump supports

I just understand why they didn't have a school body election between on of the school girls and a parent as a parody of the elections. That was their old way of doing it, take real world events but tie them to the town. Somehow they decided parodying real world events 1 for 1 was a good idea.

Would Cartman have been Trump?

>In April 2011, Nintendo's financial earnings report confirmed that Pokémon Black and White had sold 11.5 million copies worldwide, making them the highest selling DS games for Nintendo in the 2010-11 financial year, and third overall, behind only the Wii games, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. As of March 2015, the games' combined sales have reached 15.60 million.

>As of January 2013, Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 have combined sales of 7.81 million copies worldwide.

>As of September 30, 2016, the games (X & Y) together have worldwide sales of 15.64 million.

>As of September 30, 2016, the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have sold 13.18 million copies worldwide.

>On its first day of release, Pokémon Sun and Moon shipped 10 million units worldwide.

Your numbers are drastically off. Gen 5 pushed over 23 million, Gen 6 pushed over 28 million.

bump

South Park stopped being episodic because the traditional TV format is dying.

They're catering to the Hulu crowd now. The kind of audience that likes long drawn out story arcs.

I don't know if it's just me growing up or not, but Pokemon seems to have faded into the background somewhat.

I'd draw analogy to the simpsons. (Though Pokemon hasn't had it that bad.) Everyone knows Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow and perhaps even Gold/Silver/Crystal, everyone knows Ash, but when you start talking about Black&White 2 or Bart impregnating a horse, most folk's eyes glaze over.

I liked G3 a lot, but it still blinds me with autistic rage to this day that they included a clock but cut day/night cycles.

How hard would a black filter with yellow squares over the windows be. The GBC could do it and you're telling me the GBA can't?

So true. After Gen 3 the designs just totally dropped off.

Removing content and features from previous titles is a conscientious choice apparently. They want games to feel distinct from one another so dont always carry things over even if it'd improve the game.

Objectively wrong. Best Pokemon is from Gen 5.

Well, they met him in China.

I wholeheartedly disagree. it was clear that Matt at least understood what anime was actually about, so it wasn't just blind grouchgodgering. if anything the episode was making fun of dumbass parents who dont understand a simple media franchise and why it might be fun
the plot about japan was intentionally spoofing the fears parents might have
the only thing they didnt quite get right is addressing how the american translators were responsible for a lot of the more fucked up aspects like needing to have 'them all'

Same, I really enjoyed gen 3 and never really got the hate for it. I'd say I liked gen 4 the least, but Pt and HG/SS were fantastic so I don't feel like it's even fair to say that, just that I disliked D/P.

If you liked it for B2W2, good. If not, your taste is shit and you should reconsider your choices in life.

Gen 4 didn't happen and none of the new evolutions and baby Pokemon existed, it was all in your imagination.

Enjoy your Gardevoir (Male).

Matsuda flat out admitted that the reason Pokémon games don't stack up features is so people go back to play the old games for those features. See .

>more plastic/less natural way of designing pokemon
I agree but oh boy, trying saying that on /vp/.

I want a Toy Bonnie so bad...

I disliked G3 mostly because they added a lot of pokemon whose typing and attack stats were mismatched as shit. Sableye's highest base stats are attack and def but ghost and dark moves used special. What the fuck.

It wouldn't be surprising these days. They're trying to push "pokémon can be anything" so they can justify their stupid new designs.

>and with every year Pokemon remains relevant and popular this episode feels all the more out of touch

Two things. There are now generations of grown ups with kids who grew up with Pokemon, so the relevance and point to the episode still remains as to how non underage people reacted to Pokemon back when it was actually new

Two, you can only be a pop culture phenom once....Pokemon continues to exist, but it's basically just a staple of childrens anime now, when it first came out it was a fucking phenomenon....it was Beanie Babies, TMNT, etc etc level nationwide craze....those days are long over even if it still keeps going on

Hell I remember waiting for like an hour in McDonalds to get a fucking Pokemon Happy Meal, and people would try to buy the toys in bulk so hey had to limit people, nothing like that happens these days

>at some point, Hitmonchan learns all the elemental punches
>being special types, it actually made him worse
At least it was fixed the next genereation.

Yeah, like a fucking magnet. Or a fucking pile of shit. Or a fucking duck.

People want to make that Darth Jar Jar theory real.

Yokai truly is WHY.

How many Pokemon have used that exact same face now?

Probably still less than the Gen 1 angry face that every pokemon uses.

Yeah. Something stupid like a ball with eyes.
What were they even thinking making this guy for Sun and Moon?
Wait. What do you mean 20 years ago?

Things like Voltorb and Magnemite looked like creatures that resembled objects, not objects that happened to be creatures

Maybe it's in the simplicity of Voltorb, and in the weirdness of Magnemite? But neither look like a house hold or man made item that you have to look hard to see is actually a creature

>Reee the one or two pokemon out of 100+ a gen look like an object
Try to be less retarded in the next 20 years.

>he hates based Comfey
Man, it's a better design than your favorite Pokemon. It's a fairy with a long tail that happens to like stringing flowers on said tail, how is that not adorable?

But gen 2 Pokemon were literally the worst in every sense. Gen 3 saved the franchise from the fate of total rehashitude that gen 2 seemed to promise.

Voltorb is LITERALLY A POKEBALL WITH A FACE.
Electrode is one BUT UPSIDE DOWN.
