How can people think this is a good idea? Think of the small businesses who can only afford 8 workers for $7.25 an hour. All of the sudden, raise minimum wage over double, they have to get rid of half of their staff, pay more to their workers monthly than they were already, and more than likely go out of business. And the end result is 4 people back on the job market, 8 if the place shuts down, looking for a minimum wage job. So that basically is the nail in the coffin for small business.
Now for large corporations, like McDonald's, they have budgeting aswell. They won't increase the budget for workers. No what they'll do is they'll find a way to balance the budget again. Say there's 50 workers there, they'll remove over half the workers there, probably 27 - 30 to make ends meet. Keep the remaining 20 - 23 for $15 an hour and automate the positions they can't fill anymore aka cash, burger assembly, grill, they could automate that whole place if they needed.
So an end result, out of just those 2 companies alone, you're seeing 34 people being laid off. It'll oversaturate the minimum wage job market like crazy, and hurt thousand of Americans across the country along with tax payers.
>Keep the remaining 20 - 23 for $15 an hour and automate the positions they can't fill anymore aka cash, burger assembly, grill, they could automate that whole place if they needed.
Sounds pretty good to me

they write off worker salaries as a business expense and get it back at the end of the year

Works fine here m8.

What about the 30 people at that place who lose their jobs? The 40 at Burger King? The 60 at Walmart and the 100 at the grocery store? The amount of people being laid off... Where do they go? What do they do? And the tax payers pay for it? How can that sound good to you?
I own a small business. I provide internet service to extremely rural areas. This will sound like shit to cityfags, but we offer up to 20Mbps download. I have two competitors. One offers a max speed of 3Mbps for $10 less than my price, the other is Centurylink who advertises 1.5Mbps but delivers about 500k for $30 less than my price.
When I was hiring, I started everyone at minimum. The BEST employee I ever found was a high school kid who could only work evenings and weekends. I gave him a raise to $20 an hour after the first month. He was good. Eager. Wanted to learn. I raised his pay to $30 an hour after the 3rd month. He quit after 4 months, to go to college for "business".
Saw him again last month. Now, he works as a barista for $8 an hour.
The guy I hired after him was 29. Started him at $15 an hour because he had a "tech" background. He called in sick (which means I had to still do the work I hired him to do, plus the work I planned to do) 3 times the first week, twice the second, and 4 days the third week. On the fourth week, he told me he needed salary to keep working for me, because he couldn't pay his bills with an hourly wage. I fired him on the spot. Of the 6 days he actually worked out of 3+ weeks, that useless fuck called me no less than 20 times each day to ask stupid questions. Never could remember the proper order for a cat5 cable, and was either too lazy or too stupid to do a web search. One customer told me later that she went to check on him when she hadn't seen him for three hours while he was "fixing her router". She found him laying on her bed playing games on his phone. This fine example of a millennial has a wife and two kids.
I don't bother hiring anymore. I got tired of working a hundred hours a week, so I raised my prices until demand fell to a level I can do by myself.
A higher minimum wage wouldn’t have killed my business, but the ethic of employees sure would. Fuck employees. Everyone wants a job, but no one wants to work.

The minimum wage is usually increased over a great amount of time, years in fact, and it's never doubled. Increased occur usually over 2-3 years and only a couple of dollars at a time. The current mainstream proposal to raise the minimum wage is $10 an hour. Some economists, but only a few, go as high as $12. There is no mainstream American economist advocating $15 an hour.
Julian White
I know they're doing it, I'm excited to see what the outcome will be. See how my theory holds up about minimum wage
Yeah your population is also 23 million compared to 380 million. That's 20x more saturation in the job market then Australia would have felt.

The rich are using the poor to kill the middle class.

You used to provide a good service for a good price comparing to what is in my provinces rural areas. Yeah getting good employees sounds hard. But yeah that kid you hired for $30 an hour should feel like an idiot you did him a real solid.
I'm a college student going into IT I don't give a fuck more work for me, but for the country i don't believe it's a good thing.
And the uneducated majority is willingly deciding it
Leo Bennett
Interesting post.
I'm 19 and currently falling for the Engineering meme, but through my teenage years every employer I worked for had a total hard-on for me, and all I did was show up and work. I never understood why until my based, old DQ boss told me that I was one of the best workers he has ever had, that's when I realized nobody my age wants to work, or even look like they're working.
Gabriel Green
I'd love to have you as a boss. At my job I'd match my performance against anyone else with whom I work in terms of efficiency, quality, and customer satisfaction. I'll admit that the job I do is worth exactly what I earn, but I'd love the opportunity to compete with my peers for higher pay.
Christopher Gutierrez
Maybe you fucking idiots should determine what pay employees get based on a percentage of the revenue the business makes annually rather than just DIS HOW MUCH YOU PAY like a bunch of fucking idiots. But you know what's even better than that you god damn worthless fucking normie slave drone fucking morons? Solving inflation by exterminating all of the fucking Jews.
Julian Rodriguez
Isn't everything two times or more the price than in the US?

Those laws are bullshit as they're not enacted until 2018 to 2021

Man i wish i could have fucking 6 dollar minimum wage here. I make around 3.2 euros per hour.
You people are spoiled rotten.
Jackson Allen
Never works. Can't say i'd complain if you shit heads get your "utopia", because I'll apply for the secret police and throw your dumbasses in the Gulags.
Ayden Wood
no it doesn't, every job that's worth under 20 dollars an hour is done by children (have you walked into any modern cafe, supermarket, or fast food place?) or asians/indians/etc. if you're a guy in your 20s and you have no job experience, you'd be very very lucky to get even a placement at mcdonalds without giving someone a blowjob.
McDonalds is a franchising business, they're actually in it for the real estate. Every franchise pays them a certain amount of money each month for using their systems. McDonalds is actually in real estate.
McDonalds corp straight up doesn't control employee payments. That's up to the individual business owner, and most of those guys are running a very tight shift where even another 2 dollars added to the minimum wage could force them to downsize or go out of business.
Most people don't understand how tight businesses are with their finances. Even billion dollar companies could get fucked up by upping the minimum wage.
Bottom line is: If you want more money, become more valuable. Learn another skill. Leave and get a job at a competitor that's willing to pay more. Talk to your bosses boss, take him out to lunch, listen to him talk about his kids or some shit. Crying for a higher minimum wage will do nothing.
Zachary Price
Why would the companies do that when their current system is working out well for them right now? Without being forced to change in a positive direction for the people they absolutely will not
That feel when not first world
Bentley Walker
Minimum wage should be 1 million dollars
Leo Hughes
We could lower the corporate/business tax rate by an equivalent amount to compensate
Charles Jones
Maybe you should prostitute your wife or youre sister.
Angel Price
same here, and minimum wage is actually low. it's the tax that get's you mate. tax and importing expensive shit instead of supporting national industry.
Kevin Brooks
Yeah, let's further destroy the workforce and cause insane inflation even more with a $15 minimum wage.
WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG GUYS
Luis Rodriguez
A Minimum wage increase is dumb and not needed. I'm a chef at Wendy's making 100k/year with a 11'' penis

Midco?

Yeah I know that's how businesses work, my old neighbor used to own a dairy Queen, almost 2 at one point. You're basically paying for the brand name and the right to use their recipes. Reason I made this thread is because Alberta just announced their $15 an hour plan. It's going be really interesting when the market becomes oversaturated with kids trying to make a few bucks going to school and people trying to live
Tru
I'd support that for small business so they could thrive
What could possibly go wrong :^) I'm trying to find people to oppose me desu

No I was just kind of agreeing there desu senpaitachi onii-chan kawaii~~~~

You know what minimum wage means? It means your employer would pay you less is they legally could. It means the work you're doing is worth less than what you're being paid. Currently, compensation is determined through supply and demand...like everything else...and the the market value of the work being performed.
That being said, pay raises are often determined by the company's success and the contribution of the employee to that success.
Bentley Watson
If you can't afford to pay your employees a living wage then you shouldn't be employing them.
Nolan Roberts
Capitalism friend :^) blame the system not the players.
(In no way shape or form am I suggesting communism, fascism tho)
Yeah sorry if it made it seem like I wasn't understanding what you meant, i know you're agreeing with me. I'm honestly trying to see why people think $15 an hour is a good thing. Do they just not understand economics?
Blake Phillips
Guys, why don't we just make the money worth more instead of paying people more of it?
Endogenous demand. Your entire 'argument' is a fallacy of composition.
Caleb Baker
>Do they just not understand economics? No. No they do not. They live in fantasy land, unfortunately.
Adam Ortiz
People don't think beyond the surface. >giving more money to employees, that's nice They don't think beyond that, they don't think about the consequences, the business, where the money comes from, how much money there is, etc.
Mason Clark
Wait till you get to your college town, it's fucking worse

higher minimum wage can go with tax breaks for companies who hire 2nd generation citizens exclusively
Samuel Myers
Why don't those fat cat CEOs and managers take a cut from their ridiculous salaries and then they can afford to pay everyone $15 an hour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those fucking Wall Street corporate crooks!!!!!!!!!!!!! Power to the people wake up America!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bernie can still be president of Hillary dies and takes Tim Kaine with her!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just another temporary fix pushed by liberal boomers.
Jaxson Cooper
I am a landlord with low-income tenants and if the minimum wage goes up I will be raising the rent accordingly. And there is very little my tenants can do about it, I live in a city with low vacancy rate, every other landlord will be doing the same thing anyway, and my province doesn't have any significant rent control rules.
Eli Richardson
The solution for western countries is to keep immigrants out, at least the low educated ones (which make up the vast majority in pretty much all western countries).
The work opportunities that requires no education in western countries are becoming less and less, and yet (most of us) keep importing low educated immigrants workers, to job market that are overfilled with low educated workers.
This lead to inhumane $7 salaries in the US. We still have our unions protecting our working class salaries here in Sweden, which lead to working class jobs becoming extremely rare and hard to find. People are consuming welfare instead.
If US, France, Sweden, UK etc would have protected our borders and not let in three billion africans/mexicans/arabs etc there would be enough jobs for our native working class, which means few would be pushed into crime/welfare = less costs for the country.
