COIE happened in 1986. That was 30 years ago. When they re-introduced Billy to the DC Universe, the comic book was Shazam! The New Beginning, although he was still referred to as Captain Marvel.

Ten years later, in 1996, they were still referring to Freddie, for example, as Captain Marvel, Jr. But the cover and title was Power of Shazam!

By the time they were talking about doing a self-titled which is why the tried the backups in the New 52, they were called and collected as Curse of Shazam and Billy was called Shazam!

There are two Captain Thunders. One's from Flashpoint and he's six kids who turn into one hero. The other's Willie Fawcett, who rubs his magic belt buckle and says Thunder to become Captain Thunder.

There are three Billy Batsons in comics. The first is from Earth-S, an orphaned boy in the 1930s who says Shazam! and becomes the World's Mightiest Mortal, Captain Marvel. He fights Nazis and has adventures with the likes of Mary Marvel, Captain Marvel Jr., Hoppy the Marvel Bunny, the three Lieutenant Marvels (Three boys named Billy Batson who can call down the thunder. To prevent confusion, they're Tall Billy, Fat Billy, and Hill Billy.), and the other Fawcett heroes. Now that Earth-S has been reformed, he's still around.

The second Billy Batson lives on New Earth. He's an orphan who says Shazam! to call down the magic lightning and fights crime with his sister, Mary (Sometimes also called Captain Marvel), and his friend Freddie, who used to be called Captain Marvel Jr. and later changed his name to CM3 before becoming Captain Marvel when Billy and Mary were stripped of their powers during Judgement Day.

Their status quo when Barry destroyed reality during Flashpoint was that Mary and Billy had been permanently stripped of their powers by Shazam after he came back to life because Mary had turned into Black Mary and forced Billy to change and be like her if he wanted to save Stargirl's life. Because Freddie no longer got his powers via the Marvel Family, but directly from the gods themselves, he swore to destroy him. This version's dead now, since the timeline was rewritten.

Neither of the previous two could say Shazam without being turned into their alternate identities.

The third Billy Batson is the current one. He calls himself Shazam. In addition to the usual Marvel abilities, he can cast spells by saying "Shazam!", which now only works to transform him if he wants it to.

That's the problem a lot of people can't get right. It's different guys.

In his first appearance, Billy tricked Adam into saying the word and he changed back to his mortal form, which was around 5,000 years old so he crumbled into dust.

Billy pulled a similar trick on Adam in Curse of Shazam, but rather than saying the word, he just called him a coward for not fighting him as a mortal and Adam took the bait, once more crumbling to dust.
