I was able to catch them when I called up an quested charges. But they would bury them in fees. I was never charged to cancel an account because I was an asshole on the phone (and went into the bank in person and threatened to pull my account)
Eventually I did pull all my accounts from WF. It was a pain of course to change banks but fuck them.
Normally I wouldn't advocate breaking the law to prove a point, but in this case something like this might be the only way to do something about it.

I've harbored a deep resentment for 'too big to fail' after learning it's all debt based.
Something like this would be catastrophic for the economy and big business while being an absolute godsend for the people.

Here is one instance of something similar. I used to work for a bank (hint: improper fraction) as a Financial Services Rep (personal banker). We were supposed to get accounts and credit cards all the time. I wasn't making my sales numbers because I wasn't going to push shitty product on my client-base. So, another FSR with great sales numbers came by to coach me. She would call customers, feed them some bs, cancel their cc, and issue a new one. Then she would get credit for selling a new card. I told her that was not right, but she didn't care. I reported that to our ethics line and nothing went forward that I was aware of. Eventually her branch and a few others were sold to some farmers state bank or something, so I never worked with her again.
Point is, banks will scheme around and find ways to get money from you. Free accounts aren't free.

Also, most of the accounts were for friends and family, and the only ones that had any real negative repercusions were the dumbasses that opened credit card accounts, because the fines for the fake accounts were applied to those empty fake accounts.

That is to say, the fines were applied to empty savings accounts. The credit cards were actually bad because people got their credit ratings hurt. But this was about ten thousand, and everyone who did it or knew but did nothing got sacked
