The Japanese are surrounded by buildings all the time so when they accidentally wonder into the forest they're so happy they have to kill themselves for wasting so much of their lives.

As someone who grew up and attended high school in South Korea, and now in Uni in America, I can tell you that what you read on the Internet is true

The mentality is failure is avoidable 100% of the time if preparation is correct 100% of the time- so in high school class is 0700-2000, preparation time is 2000-2200 in study room, and free time is for few hours on Saturday.

tl;dr there are many reasons but academics and pressure to succeed most likely affect suicide in Korea and Japan

It's a different culture. I think it's mostly due to their depressingly materialistic superficiality and claustrophobic over-worked, super-stressed environment.

They use to believe suicide was an act of honor or some shit like that, or maybe they wanted to be with their waifus.

I've heard that getting any professional psychology help sucks over there especially because they're so concerned about their image that they wouldn't be caught dead going to see a shrink so they just bottle everything up until it just finally gets to be too much for them and they kill themselves.

I think they're too image-driven to impress others with looks, work, education, etc that a lot can't keep up and just think they're failures at life.

I don't know the data but I believe the biggest variance is amongst the high school and college age group, and the factors that have affect are obvious

For adults above the age of 30, I believe suicide rates might not be much different from other nations? I would not be sure if there would be a common factor, however, most commonly would involve finances/relationship problem/mental illness/ altered states

I'm a half Japanese half white hapa living in California.

My mother is the Japanese one, and even I was suicidal and medically depressed for some time. I'm on Prozac right now for depression, and I was hospitalized for a suicide attempt around 8 years ago.

Japanese society is too achievement orientated. Its very "I don't love you, I love your achievements." My mother never showed me much love because my achievements were always lesser than that of my older sister.

I can't imagine what this would be like on a societal scale. Where the entire country doesn't love you, they love your achievements. Combine that with a workplace that abuses its employees, a society that over-values education, a society that doesn't emphasize religion as much as the US does, a society that encourages drinking, and a society that shuns psychiatry. And I'd probably be dead too if I lived in Japan.

This is the only good thing I'll say about Japan.

It's about being honorabru. Being honorabru is a concept lost to modern western society. Boomers, genX, millenials, and the facebook generation all have slowly given up the concept of accepting responsibility for committing wrong doing.
