A 19-year-old Iowa man who filmed himself molesting a baby girl avoided further time behind bars after receiving a suspended sentence, according to reports. A judge handed down the 10-year suspended term for Kraigen Grooms on Monday after he pleaded guilty to engaging in a lascivious act with a child, KTVO-TV reported. Federal agents said Grooms had posted pictures to an underground child pornography website of himself having sex with a 12- to 18-month-old baby girl, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

He probably didn't realize that it was illegal, or was deeply sorry and regretted it. This combined with the fact that it's unlikely to have any negative effects on the victim would be enough to have the sentence suspended. Law, especially in the cases of juvenile delinquents is there to protect society and make sure they don't do it again. If this can be reasonably assured, there is no need to ruin someones life over their misdeeds. The basis of any legal decision should be to not do more harm than good. I just hope the journalists don't fuck up that guys life.

The legal system is not there to protect your idea of right and wrong. It's there to protect the people. Even if someone is a criminal they're still part of "the people". So unless you have an actual reason you should not punish someone disproportionately to the damage done. This is why weed is being decriminalized. If you don't do a whole lot of damage, you should not have your life ruined.
