Who would be the western modern day equivalent of Miyazaki?

Who would be the western modern day equivalent of Miyazaki?
>Popular animation director for a region who has created a lot of iconic characters/scenes/moments

And Disney as an entire company doesn't count.

Lassetter

Stan Lee.

Also Walt Disney as a person

This. Or Brad Bird or any of the guys at Pixar really.

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera

Disney would be more on the equivalent of Tezuka as "founding father and still a big influence today".

He didn't influence much anyone though in recent times. You can't homage in the US like you can In Japan cause copyright. Walt did his part in making children's cartoons slightly more adult friendly

I don't think dead guys are very modern.

Alan Moore for comics.

Tomm Moore and Sylvain Chomet.

They are not household names, but they are recognizable through their individual animating and drawing styles. Their films are personal on a level that Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, and any of the 3D CGI studios cannot be.

He's not dead yet?

His obstinence sustains him.

Came out of retirement for the 18th time to work on some CG project and shit on a guy's tech demo.

Sadly, there is not a single western amination director who produced so many good works within lifetime.

Of course Don Bluth does not count, # of his good movies pale in comparison.

Guess he's keeping an eye on him

he's 76
He's not Stan levels old.

that guy that made loss

Stan couldn't handle Miyazaki. He'd choke on all the disgust.

Probably Genndy.

Genndy is basically what if Miyazaki was constantly screwed over by Western media and wasn't allowed to do his shit without editorial bickering or outright cancellations.

But he always puts out his A game and his animation is always full of energy. He just knows how to make a fucking cartoon look and smell good. But then Sony has to say "make Dracula look like Adam Sandler".

But this number is completely different in Japanese years.

Kind of like dogs.

Nips live a fucking long ass time if they don't kill themselves. Christ look at Araki. If they don't lose the will to live they never die.

And he will never be.
Nobody will ever be as old as Stan.
Stan is Eternal...

Does Sup Forums like his films or are they still butthurt about him?

Sup Forums doesn't like anything. Least of all anyone popular with normies. His opinions on anime are the least of the reasons they hate him.

Agreeing with Tomm Moore. Chomet's desire to move toward live action / 3D shows he doesn't have the same ideals as Miyazaki, and the varying tones between Belleville and Illusionist are staggering.

Both of Moore's films are grounded in Irish culture and share a distinct art style; can't wait for his third.

user that news caster was 65 in 2004. They have a weird shelf life.

you're fooling yourself if you think miyazaki is modern.

Good pick, wish he had more films.

Don Hertzfeldt, Bill Plympton, and Travis Knight are also worth mentioning. Again, not all household names, but they each have particular voices in animation. Like Miyazaki, they aren't just designers or directors or animators. They are film makers.

>tfw when Seth MacFarlane is more of a household name than most people in this thread

That being said, I want to say Stan Lee for comics.

That guy used to dye his hair

Well, Miyazaki was the Chuck Jones of the silver age, theres no modern version of Chuck Jones, heck you be lucky to find anyone to be on par to Shamus Culhane.

However, the modern day version of Paul J Smith is Lauren Montgomery.
>Also Walt Disney as a person.
Walt was a producer and a idea man, you are thinking of Ub Iwerks or at least Ward Kimball.

Walt Disney or Bruce Timm

Sup Forums hates everything that doesn't have cardboard cutout waifus.
