Captain Marvel

I dont know about any of you, but Marvels complete fucking cuntish methods of trying to force this character to work in the comics made me go from being interested in Carol Danvers to loathing the character.

At this point, i dont even want to see the fucking movie because the comics have tainted the character so bad.

I'm gonna wait to see if this thread actually gains traction before I weigh in, but until then.

I agree...partially.

I loved Ms. Marvel back in the day, now it's taking all my will and effort not to hate her when I see her.

I do hate what they've done to her, and what they're trying to do. Hopefully the movie will fix her.

My only real problem with her is that writers keep TELLING us everybody loves her, instead of SHOWING us why everyone should love her. She actually has a bunch of reasons why she should be a popular Marvel character - overcame alcoholism, loves space, loves the military, can hold controversial positions with depth and nuance (though that hasn't been seen lately), has a teen superhero who used to idolize her... And on top of that, she keeps getting interesting positions almost effortlessly - air force pilot, spy, leader of the Avengers, head of Alpha Flight.

But one thing she's been getting constantly these days, which almost no other superhero I can think of has? Cheerleaders. She has the Carol Corps (the team, not the fans), Alpha Flight, and now a reality show and tons of in-world fans. And over five years and four volumes, virtually none of those groups have challenged her. Her conflicts have mostly been relatively tame and external - bad guys/aliens show up, fight for a while, then get spanked. In superhero comics, that's a job, not a compelling character. When she HAS had issues stemming from internal conflicts - the conflicts get heavily minimized, preventing any interesting development. Dark Avengers? She quits immediately instead of exploring a soldier put in a bad position by a commander. Lead-up to Secret Wars? Hickman used her as dumb muscle. Civil War II? She's arguably the biggest fuck-up on the board, getting Banner killed, arresting hundreds based on one kid's say-so, and beating Tony Stark into a coma. She should be a MASSIVELY unpopular, or at least highly polarizing figure in the MCU. Instead, she gets teacher's pet status from the President, continued control of Alpha Flight, and we're told she's now incredibly well-liked.

I like Captain Marvel. I really do. But I wish to god that one of her writers would stop telling us she's popular, and make her DO THINGS to MAKE her popular. (Preferably better things than CWII.)

Carol's in universe deal currently is literally that everyone loves her because she has god tier PR firms working for her and (if Kamala's interactions are anything to go by, given she met her and was her biggest fan) if they knew the real her that PR keeps you from seeing everyone would hate her.

I was ambivalent towards her, kind of liked her run pre CW2, now she is just awful.

Also I am tired of everyone in her book telling her she is right all the time, she did nothing wrong, etc. like shit, let her be wrong.

This. There's no consequences. There's no chance for redemption.

How can she earn back the reader's trust and respect if she's not even forced to do it in her own books?

She led teams that tried to arrest or kill Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and Miles Morales. Even if you had a PR firm that sent hookers to everyone who hated you, you'd still end up having protesters and people wanting to kill you.

>Tony Stark
lost most of his good reputation during CW and Axis
>Bruce Banner
literal monster who has destroyed the livelihoods of thousands of people whos continual survival was seen by many as proof the avengers were a bunch of corrupt assholes just looking out for themselves
>Miles Morales
your average marvel citizen doesn't give a shit about the 10+ spider people who aren't the 'main' one, let alone keep track of which is which

Yeah, except for all of those, there were also groups that would've been fiercely loyal to them. People saved by Iron Man/Hulk/Spider-Man, people who thought Tony was right during CW1, people who would've protested about racism or thoughtcrime for locking up Miles...

I want to see a book about someone running Super Hero PR. A bunch of men and women in suits working through lunch trying to come up with explanations as to why POPULAR HERO A is now evil

>Shit Iron Man got shit faced and crashed into a school
>Let's just blame Skrulls and call it a night
>We just used Skrulls last month with the whole Captain America thing, no one's gonna buy it.
>Fuck, what about mutants can we work mutants into this somehow?

the most popular female marvel character is probably Storm and she's never had a steady solo book to my recollection.

Should have just put Danvers on whatever Avengers book is the main book and give her the cool moments and make people actually want Carol to get her own book before giving her one instead of just throwing it out there.and expecting it to sell.

How the fuck did she got from that to what she is now?

THE GREATEST

Does marvel have any popular female heros that arent mutants?

Captain Marvel.

Socialism. Not even the hottest woman is safe.

Kamala was popular for like 2 years

She-Hulk, Captain Marvel (Carol), Captain Marvel (Monica), Black Widow, Nico Minoru, Spider-Woman, Thor, Wasp.

Elektra, though an anti-heroine.
She-Hulk and Squirrel Girl are kind of popular, too bad their books were given to literal retards.

>Thor
>Spider-Woman
>Monica

You really aren't going back to tumblr are you.

To be perfectly frank there's only one female helmed run you could call "Successful" and it was generally pretty niche at best and marvel has gone out of the way to disregard it for reasons I can't understand

Wait, Billy Batson's a chick now? The SJWs have gone too far!

LOOOOL I CAN'T EVEN
REBLOG!

The only one in that list that i see having mainstream popularity is widow because of avengers. I can see shulk having a bit because of her relation to hulk and that awful chyna porno but the rest no

Hey, Spider-Woman and Monica are both 30+ years old, that suggests at least some popularity. Jane Foster as Thor... eh, she sells well enough.

Popularity's relative. And if we're doing movie ties, Wasp ought to be up there too, and Carol will be soon enough.

>Monica
>popular

I fucking wish

I liked her during the Brain Reed comic.

>Spider-Woman and Monica are both 30+ years old, that suggests at least some popularity.

Spider-Woman vanished for 15 years before Bendis decided to put her everywhere because she gave him a boner.
This is why she's still around, she's one of Bendis waifus. As soon as he croaks, and let's hope it's soon, she goes away with him.

>Popularity's relative
lolno

>Nico Minoru
I have no idea who this is.

Goth chick from Runaways, who was kinda popular in the 00s but definitely irrelevant now.

I think that marvel has just done so much in trying to establish Carol Danvers as captain marvel that it would be waste for them to give up on the character simply because certain people don't like the direction marvel has been taking the character in particularly with civil war ii.

THIS THIS THIS

I'd say that sticking to something that isn't working is a bigger waste especially when they are going to change her to her movie personality when that comes around.

Everyone agrees with you. Her "Captain Marvel" series have sold worse and worse. The latest relaunch #1 sold worse than the last numbered issue of her previous relaunch. It's essentially a money loss project that Marvel runs just for the PR, just like the Inhumans titles.

>Instead, she gets teacher's pet status from the President, continued control of Alpha Flight, and we're told she's now incredibly well-liked.

So basically Tony after Civil War 1.

You obviously don't remember the original all that well, because everyone hated Tony, including himself, yet he still had to justify his actions as being for the greater good. As shit as the event was, that's some good development.

Carol's situation doesn't even come close.

I'd read it.
I wish better people wrote and drew she-hulk

Ok this meme gotta end, post a page or I call it bullshit and even then has that been brought recently or was that just a thing during her time as Ms marvel.

Also I dont trust PR team in marvel, remember the PR women who helped the x-men during utopia, that went to the trash.
