Both films are great on their own merits, the new one isn't trying to "outdo" the original, it is a completely standalone film.
But in some departments the new one is most definitely better, for example the romantic subplot of K and his virtual waifu is ten times more genuinely emotionally investing and moving than the absolutely flat romance with non existent chemistry we got from Deckard and Rachel in the original.
This is pretty much a non disputable fact.

Okay honest opinion of two people who watched it today. My Dad and I.
Dad is usual dadcore watcher, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Bladerunner, James Bond that kinda shit.

Left after 30minutes the theatre.

Me, I am a patrician. No time for bullshit, fuck all that capeshit and stupid plot that I have seen in 20other movies. I paid 15bucks, I want ART and not another movie.

I liked the first one, not for it's plot or it's shallow philosophical aspects.
It was the aesthetics, gorgeous movie, gorgeous! The first one.

So I stayed...for 30min more and then left.
This movie seems more like it was made by marvel or dc an tries to be some comic bullshit.
Proportions of the city seem fucked in the bird eye view shots, too crowded and huge even for scifi standards.
Some nice areas and aesthetics but only like 10/15 % rest is some ugly bleak shit that reminded me of nolans 3rd batman.
Cringeworthy parts, too.

If Bladerunner from 1982, created embraced the cyberpunk aesthetics that we see in films like akira, ghost in the shell(anime) matrix or some other stuff.
Then this one reminds me of Starwars.

I ask the same question. But for me it's a little more complicated. As I'm a Bladerunner v.1 fan, but am also one who never goes to movie theatres, finds it difficult to sit in a room with other people staring at light patterns on the wall without focusing on the absurdity of the whole apparatus and exercise. I think I will ignore all Bladerunner /tv threads to avoid spoilers and simply wait for it to come out on bluray.

You can go to a cinema early on a weekday and there will be maybe 5 people in the theater with you, or maybe no one at all. Watching a film in a cinema all alone is so goddamn great, it's like you have a private screening all just for you
