it was a different time
It hit the zeitgeist. Right guys at the right time.
The Internet didn't have YouTube fail vids
Back when Steve was still huffing, he turned to insanely crazy those days.
to your original question, it was new, it was radical, it caught the teen spirit of the time very very well. People were watching those roadtrip vhs from pro skater tours which were basically the same just less fucked up shit. They just came in the right time at the right place.
Also Tremaine had extremly good networking with MTV execs
>grown men unironically doing the dumbest most outrageous shit they could come up with
It's literally bottom of the barrel lowest common denominator entertainment and they did it better than anyone before them. And, as others have mentioned, this was in the day where everyone didn't upload their home videos to the internet when any inane thing happens to them.
...
this is the real answer all those fail video compilations still get millions of views in a day people like that stuff and it also had the more hardcore stuff for the weird people like the constant poop and puke play they did.
They took the age old comedy shtick of hurting yourself for laughs and took it to a new level.
I just want another 3D Jackass.
Did watch the CKY tapes a few weeks back after finding them in my attic. the fucking nostalgia hit hard
youtube.com
It was before the Internet and clickbait. And because people have always enjoyed seeing others getting hurt. It's just that now you can get all that by going to Youtube. The Internet took out a lot of old giants. It's why the old porno industry got overtaken by a gorillion free porn sites. No longer did you need to go to a shady porno store to buy a tape of pros going at it, now you can just search for your fetish of choice and fap away.
Because Knoxville had charisma, Steve O was insane, and the girls loved Bam
lynsi hughes fucked bam margera
White people are plebeians who enjoy low forms of entertainment
They were like the three stooges, only there was more of them, they were less jewish and they were drunk or high a lot of the time
I legit rewatched jackass 2 last week. still hilarious. Shame most of the guys dont want to do part 4 because the director and steveo dont want to get addicted to drugs and booze again. Maybe hand it off to a new group of funny idiots
The stunts were funny and cool and more importantly the guys were all very likeable (apart from bam) and knoxville was a very funny dude with awesome comedic timing. You cared about the guys doing the stupid shit so it didnt seem like stupid shit for stupid shits sake by try hard idiots klike say the dudesons
*throws ball into hoop*
A mix of male comradery and low-brow humor.
Its so macho it often is pretty much gay (no homo).
Yeah it was a different time.
anyone 10-20 between 99-06 was seriously fucking crazy. What a time to be alive. Raised on a diet of wwe attitude era, south park and jackass led to a generation of people obsessed with nihilistic self destruction and not giving any fucks.
past generations were pussies when it came to that god shit
future generation is complete pussy and require consent forms just to hold hands
my generation were kings first and only real men left
Johnny had great bants and It never looked scripted.
"Try not to hit me with your purse next time"
lol there's literally no way a show with only white men on it could ever air now even if they were fatsos uggos midgets and poors.
Winrar.
AY YO WHIPEPO PARENTS TAKE TIME OUT BLACK PARENTS BEAT YO ASS NAHMSAYIN....NIGGA OVER HERE GOT A TIGHT ASS SHIRT ON
Jackass was a perfect cocktail. They had the balls to grievously injure themselves, they were able to think of funny ways to get hurt, and most of them were genuinely entertaining personalities. Jackass 1-3 (including the .5s) are golden.
>high tier: Knoxville, Dunn, Pontius, Steve-O, Bam sometimes
>mid tier: Bam, Preston, Wee-Man
>shit tier: Danger Ehren, Dave England
Sad but true. Even something like Wildboyz would never fly today, much less on the new pussyshit MTV.
I have never found wiser words about this topic. You are right. pic related, it´s from the attitude era.
God tier: April
This guy gets it
no she can go Shit tier with bam his dad was cool though
mid and shit tier are mixed up man
Before MTV went completely to shit.
Before YouTube.
Lowest common denominator
Is Wee Man kicking himself in the head Kino?
youtube before youtube
Would probably be called problematic and full of toxic masculinity if it was tried now and never existed before.
This was a factor but not it at all. Even pre-YouTube you could easily find footage of people doing dumb shit and getting hurt. Jackass stood out because of the crew. Knoxville was a one-two because he was hilarious and the female audience wanted to suck his cock. hit the nail on the head.
If you look at the YouTube wannabes, you'll notice that 1. it's much shittier and 2. the only people watching are little kids (12 and under)
This. People loved the stunts and the crazy antics, but they also loved the behind them.
Also "extreme" culture was reaching its peak, with skateboarding, nu-and alternative metal rising up. This show and things like it all rode that culture wave. Right place, right time.
Weeman is always dwarf cinemà at least
>people still rating Bam above Dave England
look i get Dave doesn't particularly stand out but he has the advantage of not being completely insufferable like Bam. the best thing about Bam isn't even Bam, it's Phil and April, and i can't help but feel "god what a terrible kid" half the time he fucks with them. but you're right, Ehren is shit
because late 90s were all about the revival of faggy indie film and people wanted something that wasn't pretentious.
/thread
>Ryan Dunn never died
>been an elaborate prank all these years
>jackass crew gets together
>brings Bam to a field with a familiar figure standing across the grass
>Steve-O tells Bam to go to him
>Bam slowly goes up in shock, realizing it's Ryan
>starts crying tears of joy that his best friend is alive
>Ryan puts out his arms to hug Bam
>sudden eruption of giggles coming from the rest of the crew
>Right before Bam reaches Ryan the grass beneath him gives way
>falls into snake pit
>youtube.com
>Jackass 4
it was different time, but unironically
it was the "XXXtreme" early 2000s culture
Impractical Jokers?
It worked because they were all friends. Maybe not at first, but by the third film you could see the brotherly bond they all had. That's why there will never be a fourth film. Ryan's gone.
prank of the century
skateboard culture
Its a combination of right place right time and just that cast of lovable characters
Instead we had America's Funniest Home Videos. That's definitely not why the Jackass crew became popular, because they're not just fail videos. That's why all the people who tried to rip Jackass off by just hurting themselves or doing stupid shit failed, because that was just part of the package with Jackass.
Wildboyz was so much better than Jackass. I dont know why but steveo and pontius running around the jungle in bikinis making gay jokes was the funneist shit ever.
I'll agree that Bam was usually insufferable but he gave the Jackass crew a lot of good material, intentionally or not. "Kicking Phil's Ass All Day Today" was a little over the top, but him putting fireworks in Phil's bedroom and car was gold. Plus he always took the pain like a champ.
This, the whole movie was like a friends simulator to friendless young me
Jackass is the ultimate friend simulator.
When people make those "movies females will never understand" threads, Jackass is the only one I agree with, you just need to be a boy doing stupid shit at some point in your life to understand the movie
I agree but Ehren at least was still doing stunts and participating. I will agree Phil was great but after learning about Bam and his drug/throwing up problem and how him and April just blamed it on Novak or other friends that don't hang out with him.
Impractical jokers is more social pain than physical.
Ehren always felt like he was trying too hard. Best way I can put it is he felt like a freshman trying to fit in with the seniors.
No one had ever seen people do that shit before.
Girls think Jackass is funny though.
pretty much. i suppose that's what made him the perfect candidate for the terrorist prank at the end of the second movie
constant reruns on mtv all over the world
>2. the only people watching are little kids (12 and under)
Jackass audience was all 12 and under also.
I blame April's poor parenting for why Bam ended up the way he did. Even he admits that he won't be anywhere near as lenient with his kids the way she was.
Sure, but that doesn't mean they understand what it's like to be a guy or to have that male bonding that the Jackass guys had.
Real men feel the need for self-destruction, so every non-faggy teenager looked up to these guys.
Oy vey
I doubt they made the movie with the male bonding theme in mind. They made it for people to laugh at people doing retarded things, which is easy to understand.
They definitely had a fair amount of the Mountain Dew audience but I distinctly remember that their primary demographic was 13-21 males, and I'd guess that there was a "sweet spot" around 16.
But now it's basically the Jake Paul audience watching these gay copycat videos.
perfect mom. absolutely precious.
>took pain like a champ
youtu.be
you mean Johnny right?
Youtube didn't exist.
Me and my mates loved it.
We used to fall off our bikes and shit infront of people just to see their reaction WITHOUT cameras and filming it.
Some of the stuff they did was pretty wacky at times. I don't think many would do the whole "shove toys up my ass" thing again.
I think it was just simple enough that it made you think that this could've been something you and your bros would've made. Easy to put yourself among them.
Johnny doesn't take pain like a champ because he's clearly incapable of feeling pain like a normal person. This is shown every time that he's genuinely broken his body. Bam clearly has a normal threshold for pain, or maybe even a low threshold, but he still put himself into painful situations.
Jackass passed on the torch to P.O.R Stunts
I love these morons, CutBone is the man
By exploiting stupid americans
I never got the appeal but then I'm pretty squemish.
you'd have to be there to understand
AFHV adds sound bloopers to everything. It completely ruins the clip.
>a different time
Wait, what? Kids today doing find this hilarious?
god
where did it all go so wrong?
you'll never live in those times again
>rating Bam
He was clearly the worst part of Jackass
>you will never experience the golden age of Newgrounds again
I don't know why I even get out of bed anymore
it was popular with rgw 14-20 y.o. crowd too
Sal isn't white
childhood is thinking Bam was the best and that everyone else would be washed up alcoholic messes
adulthood was realizing that it was always Knoxville that was the best and Bam was the real washed up alcoholic
youtu.be
thread theme
>Even pre-YouTube you could easily find footage of people doing dumb shit and getting hurt
No, Jackass started even before that time.
>watching jackass with your mates then going bike/skate riding and purposefully doing reckless self-destructive shit to mimmick your idols, getting home with torn and bloodied clothes and having mom yell "WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM?!?!?" at you, locking up yourself in your room, put the system of a down cd on the stereo and playing videogame the rest of the day
>I doubt they made the movie with the male bonding theme in mind.
They didn't need to because it cames naturaly to them, they are just total bros and it was evident whenever they were together
dumb youngfag
Why are you doing this to me man?
This. Perfect example of why all the offshoots that came after Jackass didn't have the same appeal. The camaraderie between the guys didn't feel like a put-on for the cameras, and their natural chemistry with each other was way more important than people give it credit for. Their friendship was just as important as the stunts, otherwise it wouldn't work or it wouldn't come off as endearing.
Nitro Circus was technically more grandiose with a lot of stunts, but they're all unlikable and don't banter like the Jackass boys do. Both Dyrdek shows were a blatant show for the camera, and didn't have the same home-made appeal since their backdrop was a big fucking mansion. The Dudesons were just... there, I guess.
...Even as a kid, me and my friends would all agree that Bam Margera was a little bitch. Damn, I was in Elementary School when Jack-Ass was in full swing. Where has the time gone, anons? Where has the time gone?
The purest forms of life
Our days are never coming back
The cannons of our time
Our days are never coming back
You aren't suffering alone, my dude
>that one friend who would try ridiculous stunts and actually pull them off half the time
>the chubby friend who sat back and filmed everything and was respected for it all the same
>rewatching the shitty camcorder footage with all your friends immediately afterwards
>going "OHHHHH" every time
>we can never go back
No way Dave England is shit tier, the man is a testicle amputee and had some of the best porta potty scenes, also the only snowboarder.
its ok user chin up
Don't let that distract you from the fact that In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them....maybe you can hire The A-Team.
haha more like the gay team haha
Dirty Sanches were ok.
This is some normie-tier Facebook shit. I will fucking murder you in your sleep tonight. Don't bother bringing your gun to bed-- it'll only piss me off even more.
They just did retarded stunts for the sake of hurting each other. They took it to far and is not nearly as funny as Jackass
