>While on location in the Philippines filming The Thin Red Line, Malick was inspecting a set piece by himself when an explosive accidentally went off. The explosion reached an estimated height of 40 feet and completely destroyed a mock Japanese camp. Fearing for the worst, crew and actors alike rushed to the scene with first aid kits. Sean Penn, the first on the scene, said: "It was amazing, like witnessing a miracle." Penn claims Malick walked out of the flames with out so much as a scratch. When Penn asked how this could be possible, Malick simply replied, "I believed."

>The reclusive filmmaker's experimental techniques were in full force while filming his latest project, now titled Knight of Cups. Actor Christian Bale weighed in on the unusual methods of filming that the critically acclaimed director employed.
>"Start of the day, I'd sometimes be given just two pages of dialogue. I call it dialogue now, but it had barely any lines for me. It was just filled with all these philosophical excerpts - Heidegger, Kierkegaard - all that good stuff. And then there'd be notes in Terry's handwriting - "Feel the Joy", Joy with a capital J, and "Cosmic rapture in the moment!". And then when I'd be in the middle of a 10 minute take, improvising all of my lines, I'd look up and see Terry shooting the squirrels. And they'd scurry all over his feet, into his hands, up his legs, all over him. Once a couple of sparrows landed on his hat and I said to him, "Terry, there are birds on your head!" and he replied, "I know, isn't it just a wonderful day?""
wtf is this true
no wonder the movie is just a collage of absolutely garbage improvisation.
Fucking lost

>One story from these early days was offered by Martin Sheen, who detailed a fight Malick had with his producer. "Terry beat the hell out of him," Sheen says. "In true Texas style - he was so Texas. Didn't even hesitate, just started swinging. Terry just whupped him. If more directors would beat up their producers, we'd have a lot more artistic freedom."
>It was at this point that editor Billy Weber came on board, and they spent 13 months in post-production and the last four months mixing the film, using four Avid machines with a fifth added at one point.[15] Malick edited the footage one reel at a time with the sound off while listening to a Green Day CD.[16]
>tfw almost DAILY malick threads now
feels good man
I know, should be hourly
Our daily Malick threads used to be GOAT. What went wrong?
Atheist redditors arrived
Even though I'm an atheist
Based Terry knows his music.
Idc what you are as long as people post interesting and insightful shit about these films, like pulling teeth trying to get good discussion on Sup Forums
What did Sup Forums think of Knight of Cups and Song to Song?
they were both great but KOC hit home and resonated with me a lot more.
Are there any movies like koc? Seen all malick btw
>rotten tomatoes
>When auditioning for Knight of Cups the actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau recalled an interesting story about Malick's unique techniques. "I was getting pretty close in the audition process, and finally was able to do a screen test in front of (Malick). It went really well, he seemed in awe and kept saying 'wow' under his breath. I was over the moon but unfortunately I got the call from my agent saying I didn't get it. Months later at a party I ran into a producer of the film who told me what had happened. I was wearing a Lacoste polo-shirt on the day and all the screen test footage was completely zoomed in on the logo. Apparently Terrence thought the crocodile was real and was transfixed of the thought of this creature trapped in this "world of polyester" as he called it. I'd love to work with him one day"

Song To Song is by far his worst effort, still pretty enjoyable though
Pretty good
This scene cahnged my life! One of the most beautiful things ive ever seen
Knight of cups was a revelation, song to song had some unforgettable scenes but eh. Malick's best when he's working with shades. There's not a lot of darkness in song to song, except for that really weird saturnine imagery in fassbender's weird inner montage idk
Kek (*¯艸¯)
Agree !! In last few efforts, I rank them : “Knight Of Cups” = “Tree Of Life” > “Song To Song”>“To The Wander” > few of documentaries....
>THR: What was it like working with Terrence Malick?
>Gosling: (his face lights up with a grin) Terry's not what you'd expect. I thought he'd be - I don't know, all formal and serious, like a professor - but he was like a little kid. We bonded pretty quickly because we both brought our collections of Pokemon cards to set, so we'd be trading and battling a lot during our downtime. About a week in, he confessed that he'd fallen in love with me - but he assured me it wasn't sexual, it was a special best-friends kind of love where he just wanted to play Super Smash Bros and have sleepovers with me.
>THR: So how did you handle that?
>Gosling: How do you think? We got a GameCube and a hotel room with two double beds, and we just had a grand old time for the rest of the shoot. It did get a little out of hand, though - he bought himself the jacket from "Drive" and started acting like my character from that movie, it was a little awkward. But as soon as I told him to cool it off a little bit, we went back to normal and it was just great.

Holy kek, this one's actually true
Sup Forums used to havel Herzog, Bergman, Malick ect.. threads all the time. It's changed quite a bit due to capeshit and reddit.

Do you think the studios will ever let Malick do a superhero movie? Or is he gonna be stuck doing low-budget indie shit for his entire life? When will Terry graduate to the big leagues?
