Watched it last night. Such a bizarre film. Had no idea who the writer or director was til the credits but it made so much sense. There were these long stretches of great interesting dialogue and creepy thriller and then really retarded disjointed shit about black people having a hard time that had nothing to do with anything. Why couldn't Clooney go down too?

I didn't completely hate it but it has a real pacing issue. It really does feel like a Coen bros movie that's been chopped up, rearranged and royally fucked with in order to fit in the black family subplot. There's no payoff to them being in the film, it pretty much just serves as background noise. Unfortunately they just keep showing them over and over again with overly long scenes. I was expecting the two stories to converge at some point but it never fucking does.

On the other hand the stuff with Damon and his family were all adequate and even entertaining at times. It'll never happen but I'd watch a director's cut without the black subplot and cut scenes added in. My guess is that would be enough to take it from a 4/10 to a 6-7/10.

The thing about Coen movies is the characters. Actors and actresses would literally kill to get a part in one, because the characters and dialog are so well done. Sometimes the action is more important, like No Country, but movies like Fargo and Oh Brother are a good actor's wet dream. Oh Brother is the movie made people grudgingly admit that Clooney could act. What;s the one thing people take away from Coen Brother's movies? THE DIALOG, and the characters. They never go racial, they never preach, they tell a story - and sometimes, the story isn't even the most important part.

You could tell the movie was going to be shitty from how the trailers were set up. The first one was set up as a standard Coen Brothers dark comedy, but it was confusing what the actual plot of the movie was supposed to be other than that Matt Damon's character owed the mob some money and had to pay them back.

The second trailer was even worse because it tried to play it off as a thriller or even a horror movie while ignoring that the first trailer wasn't like that at all. Neither one seemed to represent the movie very well.

When I saw the trailer for this I don't think it had even a single black person in it, let alone enough to think there was some sort of race relations element.
