>At times he seems the type of SF writer I'm not a huge fan of, the ones that thing they're writing really important work with weighty themes that outweigh the need for characterisation and can just coast by off archetypes, but in reality are just detailed worldbuilders with nearly as little grasp on story as they have on characters, no matter what they think.
This is a really good point, and I think Miles definitely grew into that fact as his writing developed -- "Interference" was basically his last traditional-style novel, and afterwards he said the format of the novel itself was limiting. All his later books were in either the "Dead Romance"/"This Town Will Never Let Us Go" commentary-filled journalistic format or the "Adventuress of Henrietta Street" / "The Book of the War" non-fiction style.

I should reread "The Book of the World", it's been a few years.

...

BUT HOW WILL YOU DO THAT OP

F R O M B E Y O N D T H E G R A V E ?

[literal muahahahas]

Lads, I still haven't carved my pumpkin and need to do that asap. What's something Doctor Who related that I could do?

>fully grown man carving pumpkins

just go down to the station and get yourself put on the register already, yeesh

Damn, well I still have it all ahead of me at least. I know a spoiler about Interference (sigh) but am extremely intrigued by it. Not sure what I'll think of his less novel-y work (I'm sure it will still be plenty "novel", heh), I'll see eventually!

There is literally nothing wrong with turning a vegetable into art as part of a jolly seasonal celebration.

You should definitely read "Dead Romance" right after "Interference" (or before, I guess, since that's when it was published); it's completely standalone but ties into "Interference" in a bunch of interesting ways. That and it's damned good science fiction.

I saw Lawrence Miles at a bookshop in Middlesex yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen EDAs in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the books and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical Infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s canon. After she scanned each book and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

>electrical Infetterence
I bet you debated how to format that for a while.

I was gonna ask here sometime about how I should start interspersing the FP stuff, I was planning release order but whatever works.

Googling Dead Romance now...a Loz Benny novel reprinted as an FP novel? Intriguing.

does anyone else find it kinda surreal neo is getting into faction paradox and stuff now?
thank you based mcganon for getting him to read the books. and thank you neo for posting so much on topic stuff these days.

>6 after started these retarded threads these Doctor Who Generals are still alive

Just fucking end it already, the show is not even good anymore.

>Pedos lol
>yeesh

Go be a normie somewhere else.

Yeah, I'm not sure the best way to intersperse FP stuff. It's all pretty standalone, but in terms of sprinkling them into the EDAs? Have you tried getting a hold of N8? Say what you want about him, but he has that Faction Paradox guru reputation for a reason

Seconded btw, this EDA readthrough has led to some of the most interesting discussion on /who/ in a while

>being this new
whatever happened to lurking?

6 what?

And I say that as a fan!

I know it's pasta retard, but the I in "infetterence" isn't usually capitalised so I figured lym added that as an Interference nod

Am I the only one who likes the Almost People 2-parter?

Read Alien Bodies and Intereference. Then read Book of the War, and then read what you want from there.

Yep!

yeah remember when the show was good? haha! XD!

moffat a shit am I right?

>the greetext is completely illegible

I actually want to know what you're trying to say.

If you go straight from Interference to Book of the War, you'll get spoiled the fuck out of Compassion's arc. Shadows of Avalon is the absolute earliest you could jump into the FP series, I think (if you care about spoilers, that is).

I like it too

It's pretty cool, so much to look forward too.
Indeed, it was entirely her doing, I was planning to have a go at some of the VNAs and EDAs the next time I did a complete rewatch (years away, though I'm tossing up trying to get through all 1's stuff before Christmas) and hit the TVM, but I was bulli-, ahem, I was gently encouraged into starting much earlier, and I'm very glad I did!

I haven't, most of my questions have been answered in the threads so far (many by you I'm sure!)...I'll think about it...
Something I find interesting is apparently Loz intended all the FP stuff as a one off thing when he was actually writing Alien Bodies? I'm guessing the spinoff was partially a financial thing after his Who bridges were burned? It's all fascinating stuff.

I wasn't a fan, although I think there was potential. I prefer the creepy scorpion-y monster in the Lazarus Experiment desu.

Guys I want to make some new header images, gib ideas for them

>Am I the only one who likes the Almost People 2-parter?
Every scene with the Doctor/his duplicate is good, great even. One of Smith's more underrated performances. The rest of the story is fairly pants, but I appreciated how the "obligatory stupid ape character" in part 1 (Cleaves) turned into the most sympathetic one in part 2.

I don't think I mentioned this the other day, but did anyone else find the 3/Sarah Jane Laika stuff at the start of Alien Bodies really unnerving? Nothing bad happened but it just felt very cold and alien and disturbing, and really surprising that the book opened with 3 and not 8.
I was almost dissapointed when it turned out to be partially plot setup for the ending, since it was such a good mood piece

I'm doing everything in release order, though I listen to other's advice too, I'm pretty set on just release order-ing through everything since that usually tends to work the best, and I'm very interested in the behind the scenes of how all this stuff went down and going in order helps me keep that straight.

>Am I the only one who likes the Almost People 2-parter?
it was competently done, but I hate "is it the real one or the fake one" trope

I haven't really either. I started last night but it got too damned cold, I got as far as /who/ on the one before I ran inside like a pussy. Take pics if you do.
>not enjoying roasted toasted pumpkin seeds
>being this much of a curmudgeon.

but muh Utopia

Let's talk about Smith and Jones again.
It's so well-structured and fast-paced that it literally never drags. Even in 100 rewatches, it's still super engaging and super fun.

I think there's a relevant interview? Someone posted it on the dicksword once, lemme try and find it

Also, I highly recommend "Man in the Velvet Mask", as far as First Doctor books go

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I miss the Judoon.

>I was bulli-, ahem, I was gently encouraged
You know as well as I do what *really* happened.

>dominant mcganon

Well, I don't miss them but they were pretty cool aliens. SJA Judoon episode is pretty good too.

He expected people to go crazy with his "War" idea. However, you arguably can't do more with the Doctor dies beyond what was done in Alien Bodies.

I find it interesting how I see more other Who writers than fans compliment Smith and Jones. Maybe it's because it's so well written that it looks effortless, so fans don't really think about how it works so well, but writers notice it more. It really is fantastic. And I say that as not a fan of 10/Martha's relationship at all.

Ooh thanks.
I have a txt file of 1st Doctor books recommendations somewhere from other anons too, I don't want to read all of them but I'm up for any good ones

Oh I remember perfectly well how you convinced me

I'm a huge Moff fan but not gonna lie...I think Alien Bodies handled it tonnes better than The Name of the Doctor

Another thing, I read a Loz interview yesterday where he said the reason he used 3 in Alien Bodies was because 3 is the "default" Doctor. Because in his view the Doctor is quintessentially 70s, but Tom Baker's performance is too tied to 4 to use 4 well in books.

I...really disagree. It doesn't matter, because 3 was used super well in Alien Bodies anyway, but I really don't agree with the idea he's the "default" Doctor, or that the "default" Doctor has to be 70s.

So I tried to empty my mind and picture my "default" Doctor, and it was 7. Who was my first Doctor. And it made me think, it's probably just people's first Doctor, not even their favourite, that imprints on them as a "default".

Maybe I'm completely wrong.

Like what Neo and McGanon said about Loz not communicating with the other EDA writers as much as other writers did, I think that was what screwed Miles over in the end. While Alien Bodies and Interference helped give the EDAs the creative shock that they needed, you have all these other authors at the time mad that some guy who never talked to them and makes passive-aggressive snipes at their writing in interviews has now implemented new EDA stories without your knowledge, and because the editor at the time Stephen Cole never came off as a strong-willed editor regarding these issues, now you're expected to write books that continue that path instead of your own ideas. And having to play the game of a guy you don't personally like over your own probably pissed off some of the Fitzroy Tavern cabal.

>Fitzroy Tavern
Hey was Fitz named after this, come to think of it?

Neo, the definitive Loz interview is sci-fi-london.com/podcast/2013/12/420-lawrence-miles
Idk what spoilers it has, go at your own peril (fwiw I don't remember there being anything major) but it's the only thing we've heard from Loz in this decade (!!) and it's a really interesting retrospective.

By every single account, Stephen Cole was an absolutely terrible editor, and you can really tell when he got his shit together and started organising stuff during the Compassion arc. I guess the fact that Lawrence Miles did so incredibly well working with dozens of other authors while editing the Faction Paradox series really stops me from taking seriously all the people who blame everything on Miles sucking at working with other writers.

I'd never made that connection but it would make a LOT of sense.

That isn't really the case for me. My first real Doctor was Nine, but I feel like my own "default" is Capaldi.

>(many by you I'm sure!)
>mfw helpful user has been n8 all along

web.archive.org/web/20080509161052/http://www.gallifreyone.com/interview.php?id=miles
Lots of Loztalk about his feelings and motivations jumping into FP, but also lots of spoilers for everything up to and past The Ancestor Cell, so I recommend you wait with it for a rainy day

Actually, part of what adds to the "Miles not knowing how to collab" is that, nowadays, Loz apparently doesn't really wanna go back to doing FP stuff, because he had a specific vision about it, and Obverse has slowly changed from his specific vision. Not that he's saying it's bad, or that it's less creative, but he appears uncomfortable with working with slightly tonally different FP (more sci fi than he envisioned it as).

Cheers, I might download it and just skip through any bits that touch on spoilers, that's what I've been doing with text interviews. I'm pretty happy that the only thing I have spoiled really from the EDAs or Faction Paradox or anything is, from Interference, that 3 dies????? wtf. Very intrigued.

Interesting. I feel like the "default default" (am I making any sense kek) is 100% 1, but personal defaults...are an interesting thing.

I have wondered sometimes, kek.

Roger that

Is he doing anything at all these days?

who is this fluid druid

>And while I'm in mid-rant I'd also like to question the long-term effects of children's movies like Toy Story and Monsters Inc, which seem to be designed to turn things that used to be astonishing and remarkable into things that are crass and ordinary. In Toy Story, all the toys magically come alive and then hold bureaucratic meetings about paint erosion. In Monsters Inc, it turns out that monsters aren't actually strange and fabulous beasts but bored clerical staff who spend most of the day hanging around the water-cooler at Monster Head Office. These films aren't made with children in mind, they're made by "professional" adults who want to feel good about their own petty lives, and as a result the next generation's being primed for clerical work from birth. I think the word I'm looking for here is "evil".
I think Pixar makes movies like that so people other than kids can watch them, not to prime children into accepting a boring lifestyle. But Miles is a fan of Teletubbies and pre-2010 My Little Pony, so he probably likes kids' franchises that appeal only to kids instead of anyone else.

Goddess
I love to lick her toes

>Loz' very politicised mindset

I had a kinda horrified "WHO AM I" reaction when I was reading one of his many huge political rants in some interview yesterday and realised I...completely agreed with it, for once. Just a b-broken clock right? Right twice a day?

Ditto for what Lym said. 9 was my first and 1 is my fav. Also I'm locked out and cold, someone post memes

...

god mem

Marmeme Dalek

Which rant?

:^) That'd be no fun if I revealed which one!

That's a very interesting point about Obverse not adhering to Loz's dream for the Faction Paradox range, but I don't think that's why he's not involved anymore; I mean, according to that podcast at least, he resigned from the whole scene for mental health issues at around the same time he first gave Obverse the license.

The podcast interview is about 50% just him talking about how popular culture has gone downhill (definitely read "This Town Will Never Let Us Go" if you want some of that, it's Loz's last novel and completely standalone).

Spoilers btw: Loz sounds nothing like you'd expect

>its a neo hides his communism thread

I don't miss this show.

Thank you lads.
;)

Why don't you carve them inside if it's too cold? :( I wanted to do a TARDIS console pumpkin but I don't think the pumpkins I got are the right size.

What are everybody's plans for tonight, anything fun? Are you dressing up?

I didn't buy a costume so I'm just going to pick up some liquid latex and blood and dress up as one of the Crossed.

Where does this meme originate? I'm sure it's possible but is there any specific reasons people meme it beyond Neo just being coy about his politics? I understand the Buddhism one at least since he does talk about mindfulness and zen quite a lot.

I don't think that's a crazy point to make to be honest. Pre 13 at least.

Still haven't found a single picture featuring Capaldi on this google search.

As terrible as 2013 was... i kind of miss it[. it was comfy./spoiler]
