I always thought ds9 was the best trek, and now that I'm finally watching babylon 5 it turns out that everything good about ds9 was actually stolen straight out of b5 and then made worse with some shit trekkie memes.
This show literally has everything: - slow burn epic saga - written by a writing room with more than 20 brain cells - dime store bruce willis AND poor mans alex siddig - unapologetically dated cg that is somehow still more believable than this modern space garbage tv

I've been watching DS9 and while it's okay, it's just nothing in comparison to Babylon 5. I'm not trying to meme, Babylon 5 is just that good. It's The Sopranos of sci fi.
The problem with Babylon 5 is the first season, at least 90% of it, is pretty boring. It's been there done that stand alone episodes, although the "real story" is happening in the background, and on rewatch season 1 is much, much better. Still, season 1 is comparable to season 1-2 of DS9 imo.
But season 2 and especially season 3 and 4 are just amazing.

The biggest issue is that JMS salted the earth with the steaming pile of dog shit that was Crusades, which was canceled after one season and spent that single season dicking around on a plotline that was simply a red herring*.
*The plague the ship was supposed to find a cure for was NEVER supposed to be the main plot. It was supposed to be resolved at the start of season two, where the "real" plot would begin as Gary Cole's character would find out that Earth Gov was still pure evil and had created a fleet of star destroyers (first seen in the fight where Ivonnova was mortally wounded) that they were going to launch and enslave the galaxy, which was still reeling from the Shadow War and Centari Prime/Narn Homeworld being bombed into oblivion.
Also there are issues where ALL of the CGI stuff was shot on super-duper cheap film stock, meaning unless they redo ALL of the CGI for the series, it can NEVER be remastered into HD, which is BTW is also why the show has been embargoed from syndication and streaming, since no one wants a standard def full screen space opera

The writing itself isn't that amazing but it is really good, there's a lot of heart, some depth in themes, endearing characters, tasteful humor, interesting scifi plots... You can very clearly see the influence of Tolkien, and I guess the links to Trek since the overall moral tone is so wholesome and idealistic; it's the kind of storytelling that inspires you to be a better person. Nowadays if you wanna see a TV show with the feeling of an epic novel saga, there's nothing but GoT which is just degenerate nihilism with no depth. B5 never pandered to normie sensibility and the compromise for that was a low budget and shit production values, but even those dated, cheap aesthetics have some charm to them, it's like playing a classic video game vs a modern soulless AAA cashgrab. B5 would never get made today or it would be a lot more mindless and mean-spirited.

JMS has stated that Babylon 5 would be too cost prohibited to remaster for our HD or bust world and that the owners of the property's response to his numerous requests to do so (because of the money and renewed interest an HD version of Babylon 5 would generate) was to tell him that it would be cheaper for them to just reboot Babylon 5 from scratch.
Supposedly, he was offered a deal to redo Babylon 5 as a series of movies, but JMS backed out of it because the studio refused to give him control over the casting (they wanted all big named stars and none of the original cast), along with wanting to dumb the entire thing down for modern viewers.

Sad that modern writers are just unable (or unwilling) to write about political themes (and the philosophical implications) without getting preachy instead of thoughtfully and rationally depicting different sides of an argument with equal intelligence; they're also so desperate to evoke modern buzzing topics and shove in references to their personal agendas instead of trying to take some distance and address more universal and timeless questions instead. Look at something like TWD which should be about the meaning of building a civilization and the different ways to go about it. Instead, it's just random bullshit, the stories have no purpose, it's all just mindless plot, a soap opera written by women.
On that note, the show that comes closest to B5 is the Chinese cartoon Legend of Galactic Heroes. Similar flaws (looks like shit, uneven episodes quality) and qualities (feels like a novel and clearly made by people who have studied war history and ethics philosophy).
